WE TRY TO avoid using outdoorsy jargon in Country Walking, so apologies for the following term: layering system. It sounds terribly complicated, doesn't it? Don't worry, it isn't. Put simply, a layering system means the clothes you put on to stay warm, dry and comfortable on a walk. In other words, an outdoor outfit you can adapt on the hoof. First comes a baselayer for your upper body, usually a sweat-wicking shirt. Lastly, if it's raining, blustery or bitingly cold, you'll probably want an outer shell: a waterproof or insulated jacket.
