OBJECT LESSON: American Encaustic Tiling Co.’s Tiles WHAT TO KNOW: While founded in 1875 in New York City, it was the 1892 opening of American Encaustic Tiling Co.’s factory in Zanesville, Ohio, that really put them on the map. Ranging from dust-pressed floor tiles and solid utilitarian wall tiles to a wide variety of decorative mosaic inlaid and glazed embossed art tiles, their designs rivaled those of English companies. By 1890 they were the largest tile manufacturer in the U.S., with additional factories in New Jersey and California. (Fun fact: Among their notable craftsmen was Frederick Hurten Rhead, the future creator of Fiestaware.)
