My husband, David, and I moved here four years ago. David had endured a third surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. Though the operation was successful, the recovery was difficult. He needed a place to heal, and retreating to the woods seemed like a good idea.
When David completed his rehab, we moved from Plymouth, Washington, to Challis, a small town with a population of about 1,000. My mother, an artist who had lived in this area decades before, joined us.
