“I won’t argue with you. Open the DAW HAL!” As computer musicians we are probably more willing to embrace the future than other creative types, and by using some of the features in our DAWs, we have already been dabbling with rudimentary (or not) forms of artificial intelligence. But this issue we’re going deeper than that and exploring some of the software that is set to – or already does – take even more of the strain out of music making. (Like we’re getting that sweaty making music in Live, Logic, Cubase et al.) A.I. seems to be breathing down our necks in many aspects of life but in music production it promises to mix, master, even create your tunes and beats for you. OK, we’re not talking about a…
Aye, aye Captains It’s an epic set of tools from the Captain’s table, and apt for this AI issue… With a large section of this very magazine dedicated to the terrifying prospect of artificial intelligence in music production – actually it’s not really that scary – it’s fitting that our lead story brings together some leading titles in the field into one Epic bundle. Captain Plugins Epic is its name and with it you get help with creating just about every part of your music, from basslines to leads, beats and more… Captain Plugins Epic has five ‘patented’ titles from the fantastically named Captains series, including Captains Chords, Melody, Deep, Beat and Play. There’s also a host of extra tools thrown into the bundle that you wouldn’t get buying the…
cm How did you get into music software? AR “My parents bought me a keyboard at a very young age and supported me messing around and playing music. I’m still playing now, 30 years later! My dad has always been into technology, so we always had a computer in the house. He’d often come home from electronic markets with new gadgets and software, and he encouraged me to get involved, especially in various fields of creative software and programming. Getting hold of Cubase VST 5 was a massive turning point – going from just playing about on a keyboard to recording it into a DAW was mind blowing! After spending years dipping my toes into a bit of everything related to creative arts and technology, I wanted to bring it…
App Store In what could be bad news for smaller developers with limited resources, Apple have started contacting vendors of apps that haven’t been updated for “a significant amount of time” (reports suggest two years) and telling them that updates need to be submitted for review within 30 days. Otherwise, the apps in question will be removed from sale (though they’ll still be available to users who’ve already purchased them). The move is part of Apple’s App Store Improvement program, which is described as “an ongoing process of evaluating apps, removing apps that no longer function as intended, don’t follow current review guidelines, or are outdated”. developer.apple.com Flux Mini 2 Designed to add “life, character and dynamism” to your tracks, Flux Mini 2 is a new version of Caelum Audio’s…
At the risk of ‘repeating’ ourselves (there’s a joke coming here) we brought you a massive guide to delay (told you) in July 2012, breaking down everything (or at least quite a lot) that you needed to know about this “oft-underestimated” effect. There was space for some fancy footwork, too, as we put the focus on currently-hot ghetto house offshoot genre, juke. “We asked if there were too many plugin formats (there are even more now)” As Reason launched its Rack Extensions standard, we asked if there were too many plugin formats (there are even more now), while in the letters pages, a reader raised the age-old ‘which is the best DAW?’ question. Needless to say, we didn’t give him a straight answer. Our interview was with Warp artist Mira…
