1 MAKING AN IMPRESSION The National Gallery of Ireland celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1874 with collection of around 60 works loaned from collections around the world. Women Impressionists focuses on four women artists associated with Impressionism – Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883), Marie Bracquemond (1860-1914), and Mary Cassatt (1844-1926). Impressionist artists are renowned for using friends and family members as models and this is especially so for women who had relatively restricted access to professional models and social spaces. In the intimacy of homes and gardens they painted their husbands, mothers, sisters, children, nieces, and nephews. My love of coastal walking started when in 2017 I decided to temporarily leave my life in London, strap on my backpack and walk across Britain. Such a journey is naturally bookended by the sea, from taking my first tentative steps away from Land’s End along the beautiful Cornish coast, to that moment - which is seared in my mind - when I rounded the last hill and in front of me was the small village of John O’Groats and water beyond. It was as a 13-year-old up to his elbows in washing suds, that Ross Geach realised his love for north Cornwall ran deeper than just fuelling a daily diet of surfing and fishing.
