Julian Sutherland-Beatson opened his waterside gallery in Bexhill-on-Sea in summer 2021 after he saw an advert for a small kiosk that was available on the promenade. It sits in front of the town’s iconic De La Warr Pavilion and the artist realised it would make the perfect place to display his array of paintings, archive-quality prints and cards, all of which feature the coastline, countryside and townscapes of East and West Sussex. Julian, whose work has been exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition three times, can now be found there most days in high season, along with his dog, Layla. We live between the Avon and Kingsbridge Estuaries, with Dartmoor one way and the sea in the other. I’ve known the South Hams since childhood holidays and five years ago my husband and I bought a house here with a long-term plan of spending more time on the coast. We commuted from Wiltshire to renovate it and became very attached, so much so that during lockdown we re-evaluated our lives and decided that it would be possible to work remotely and to go part-time. We moved in last summer, in time for our two teenagers to start the new school term. My family surf, but I prefer paddleboarding on the estuaries. ‘We can think of few ingredients that change dishes in the same way as salt does. What would life be without a smooth caramel punctuated by salt crystals, a perfectly cured bacon rasher, or a warm handful of glistening, salted potato crisps? ‘Our life has centred around sea salt – making it, perfecting it and travelling the world selling it – for over 20 years. We use seawater drawn from the Menai Strait around Anglesey. Before the water even reaches our saltcote (an old French word for a building by the sea), it has already passed through two natural filters: a mussel bed and a sandbank. After being immersed in the natural wonders of Norfolk’s creeks in our last exploration, this month we are heading to a very different sailing destination in the North Sea – Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A couple of years ago, before the pandemic, we went on a four-day trip to the Isles of Scilly (pictured). We went because – honestly? – I wanted to say to the children, ‘You’re so silly because you’re in Scilly!’.
