BOOK of the MONTH To explore the age-old traditions of coastal fishing, maritime historian Mike Smylie journeyed from North Devon through Wales and up to the farthermost reaches of Scotland. On the way he interviewed many working and retired fisherman, gaining insight into ancient techniques for catching salmon and herring, methods passed down through the generations over many hundreds of years. The Marine Conservation Society has updated its Good Fish Guide, so we know which seafood to choose and which to avoid. English farmed scallops and English Channel sprats (often listed on menus as whitebait) are now on the Best Choice list, along with hake, Icelandic coley and hand-dived scallops. Meanwhile UK squid, some American lobster and ling are in the Fish to Avoid category. Friends for years, Julia Bird and Melanie Molesworth worked as stylists on interiors magazines in London before moving to the country – Julia to Cornwall and Melanie to Dorset. Their shared love of nature, and in particular a passion for seaweed, has now brought them together again. They collect seaweed from local beaches (the British and Irish seas are home to more than 600 varieties) and hand-press them by traditional methods to create beautiful, framed artworks. I grew up between Nigeria and the UK. My mum started trading in spices so we travelled about. She’d come back to Nigeria from South Africa with apples and from England with strawberries. I’ve always eaten foods from across the world. My favourite breakfast is plantain with sausage and baked beans! Last month, we explored Falmouth, Britain’s deepest natural harbour. This time we are heading to the UK’s largest marina, Brighton. I’m a Pisces so I like water, full stop. When you look out to sea you get lost in the water and go back to nature. It clears the mind. My favourite place is Jersey in the Channel Islands, where I spent 29 years running restaurants – Longueville Manor in St Saviour, Bohemia in St Helier and my own restaurant, Ormer, also in the capital. On a clear day you can see over to France and St Malo.
