The number of women buying diet pills in the UK is soaring, with at least 20 per cent having tried them by the age of 19. However, the pills – which are claimed to lower calorie intake and reduce appetite – can cause worrying side-effects, including high blood pressure and dizziness. Shockingly, since 2012, there have been more than 115 cases of fatal poisoning. Student Eloise Parry, 21, died in April 2015 after taking eight diet pills containing Dinitrophenol (DNP) – an industrial chemical used for explosives and fertilisers – that she bought online.
