W e have some lovely, cheery projects in this month’s magazine. One good way to update the look of your kitchen is to change the knobs on the cabinets. Making small changes like this can refresh things without it costing very much. Knobs are easy to throw; small ones (for cabinets) can be thrown off the hump, while larger versions can be made to any size you want, for example for chests of drawers. We’ve given details of how to attach them with screws through a plate, but if you’re experienced/ confident, you could do away with the foot plate and use the hidden screws that shop-bought handles come with. You’d need to be sure of your clay’s shrinkage if you want them to fit perfectly, but there’s absolutely nothing…

You will need: ■ Clay – stoneware preferably, for durability ■ Tools for throwing – water bowl, sponge, cutting wire, ribs ■ Glaze of choice to suit clay type Before you begin: These knobs are all thrown individually on batts, but an alternative approach would be to throw them off the hump. I feel gloomy this morning. Well, there’s a great start! I shouldn’t; it’s been a brilliant few weeks. We’ve enjoyed some much-needed time off, sharing fun and sunshine with friends and family. It’s inevitable, really, that I should feel somewhat empty when that comes to an end.
