If you love the stunning effects that can be achieved by alternative firing methods firing but don't have the equipment needed to achieve them, then this book could well be the answer! Jolanda van de Grint explains how to use your electric kiln to create unique colours and patterns by using saggars (closed pots). And the best bit? It doesn't damage your kiln. By using a saggar containing combustible materials, you're essentially creating a mini wood-kiln inside your electric kiln and can achieve similar results – muted earth tones and unpredictable colour flashing. I always find the winter the hardest time of year, particularly after a break from the workshop, the likes of which we had over Christmas. Trying to get back to work, doing our best to pretend everything is as usual, after the sadness of just a few weeks ago, has taken some doing. Still, the routine of getting Pippin onto the school bus and Fred to nursery has thrust us back into enforced normality. Confessions of a novice Delayed for a year due to Covid, a long-awaited Anglian Potters demonstration finally went ahead on January 16th For almost two years, I've seen my fellow local potters only via my computer screen, in a fortnightly Anglian Potters Zoom session. In the earliest days of lockdown, this was a great way to stay connected with the group. It was also the perfect opportunity for more experienced potters to share their knowledge with newer ones. PROJECT ONE This super two-part feeder makes a lovely feature in the garden, and if you hang it somewhere visible from a window, you will have hours of pleasure watching the birds come and go – and a few pesky squirrels, if my garden is anything to go by! Continuing from our profile of ceramic maker Wendy Lawrence in the last issue, we follow up with a step-by-step guide to her working process A word from Wendy to begin: “I make for the enjoyment of the material and, therefore, have a variety of hand-building techniques. I gouge out solid pieces, slab build, coil, drape slabs into moulds and formers and carve solid pieces of clay. I use a heavily grogged stoneware clay from Scarva that is really strong. I start by developing the form then progress to carving, which is by far my favourite stage. PROJECT FOUR This is a somewhat stylised monolith compared to the aged examples we see in stone circles – and, of course, very much smaller in scale. However, covered in magma-like glaze and given time to weather in the garden, it won’t be long before the sculpture looks like something from another time Before you begin: For once, this is a project where fine attention to form and surface aren’t needed. SURFACE DECORATION This is a real playtime technique.
