Monaco, The Other Two, Revenge, Bad Lieutenant, now Sea Fever… Though New Order sound little like Joy Division, from which they spun off, there’s an unwritten rule demanding that any record featuring their members sound at least a little like the parent group. This time, however, only their most recent recruits, Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham, are present, and, furthermore, Sea Fever was co-founded by Iwan Gronow. This, then, perhaps accounts for them most resembling a specific side project, Electronic: Gronow plays bass for Johnny Marr, star of that collaboration alongside Bernard Sumner.
Admittedly, these similarities are often technological, and anyway, it’s not true of everything: co-vocalist Beth Cassidy (of post-punk outfit Section 25) lends Folding Lines a welcome femininity and Afterthought is more like Gary…
