Launched alongside the 3.4- and 4.2-litre Series III XJ6s in April 1979, it remained in production through to November 1992, by which time an XJ40-based XJ12 was almost ready to hit the market. Although the Series III brought with it numerous improvements, not least its Pininfarina-penned roofline changes, it was essentially an update of the original XJ12 from 1972, which in turn had been developed from the Series I XJ6 of four years earlier. UP FRONT NEWS AND VIEWS COMMEMORATIVE E-TYPES Jaguar Classic has announced it will be creating six matched pairs of E-Types to celebrate the legendary sports car’s 60th anniversary in 2021. Forming the E-Type 60 Collection, each pair of E-Type 60 Edition cars pays tribute to the two oldest E-Types – 9600 HP and 77 RW – that played such pivotal roles in the unveiling of the car at Geneva in March 1961. Now owned by Jaguar historian and author Philip Porter, 9600 HP was famously driven from Coventry to Switzerland by Bob Berry, Jaguar’s public relations manager, the night before the official launch. With an outstanding reaction to the car and overwhelming demand for drives, legendary Jaguar test engineer Norman Dewis was then instructed to ‘drop everything’ and drive a…

REPLACING THE XJ40 The XJ40 officially came to an end in August 1994, but the essence of the design that had taken so long to bring to market was destined to live on for eight years more – spanning two further generations of XJ, until the all-new aluminium X350 was ready for launch in 2002. The XJ40 had in fact been scheduled for replacement by an all-new model codenamed XJ90, featuring a more traditional style. But as Jaguar designer, Fergus Pollock, told our colleagues on Jaguar World magazine recently, the budget wouldn’t stretch to a ground-up new car. XJ40 IN PRODUCTION After Egan called a conference with his top 100 managers, it was decided that the XJ40 had been sufficiently tested and was now reliable enough – and enough of an improvement over the existing car – to commit to launch. The XJ40 production lines at Castle Bromwich hummed into life in June 1986 and the Scottish press launch was a resounding success. Unfortunately, the firm’s eagerness to ramp up production to meet demand was to be the cause of the issues with early XJ40s, most of which stemmed from inadequate testing. Despite covering more development miles than any previous model, this was done in the hands of professional test drivers and engineers, which meant the cars hadn't received the varied punishment meted out by the general public.…

Two such dealerships were Henleys (described in its advert below as “England’s largest Jaguar distributor”) and Charles Follett Ltd, which had prestigious premises in Berkeley Street, London.
