Every year at this time, as we put together the Classic Ford Awards, it gives us the opportunity to reflect (in between arguing over who should be selected) on the season just gone, and perhaps more importantly, focus on the year ahead. Every year, too, we generally agree that it’s been one of the best yet for the old Ford scene, with the standard of cars, parts and shows just getting better and better, and wonder if the coming months will see those standards raised. And of course they will be, because it’s in all of us to try and improve on what we’ve done before, whether we’re tinkerers or fully-fledged restorers. Fans of retro aftermarket wheels will be saddened to learn that, hot on the heels of BBS’s insolvency (see the November 2024 issue), wheel brands TSW, Rotiform and American Racing are caught up in the bankruptcy of US company Hoonigan, which entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under the pressure of a $1.8bn debt in mid September. Established as a lifestyle brand by famed stunt driver, the late Ken Block, Hoonigan was merged into aftermarket wheel distributor Wheel Pros in 2021, the organisation taking on the Hoonigan name in 2023. The company’s portfolio included many aftermarket wheel brands, but the two with which most of us in the UK will be familiar are TSW and Rotiform. We could probably write a book about Mark Burgess’ Mercury Grey Fiesta RS Turbo, as it’s played such a huge part in his life over the last 30 years. From daily driver to modified show car and everything in-between, its certainly seen some changes. Unusually, for a 1990s Ford, Mark somehow had the foresight to ensure the often rust-prone Mk3 has always remained it tip-top condition — an enviable position to be in right now for some, we’re sure. This meant he’s managed to avoid any talk of welding, bare-metal restorations and resprays and as we’ll discover, funds have been spent wisely elsewhere. It’s a name most of us have heard of, but seldom few have ever seen. That’s probably because Stephen now owns the last limited edition Mk2 Escort Huntsman on the road (as far as we’re aware) and thankfully it appears to be in good hands. “I’d been after this particular car for ages, “he tells us, “I couldn’t believe my luck when it eventually appeared for sale.” With only two owners from new, this 1.3L-based Huntsman remains incredibly original and still retains the trademark Ghia seats, Mexico steels, XR2 spotlights, carpeted boot, chrome trim, double reverse lights and side stripes fitted by the Brighton dealership who exclusively supplied this model when new. The Cosworth YB didn’t actually start out as a turbo engine at all. Its roots lie in a privately funded conversion for the humble Pinto engine. In the early 1980s, several people were looking towards producing 16-valve aftermarket head conversions for this engine, perhaps with a view to succeeding the mighty BD series. The intention was always to produce it as an aftermarket kit for punters to bolt to their own engines. As is usual with a Cosworth project, it’d already given it the designation — YAA. The concept was nothing new: Holbay had already had a good go and there have been other versions from Piper and Warrior too. All are great conversions and produce a storming engine. Rob and his Escorts are legends on the classic Ford scene. His previous white Mk2 caused quite a stir going from immaculate show spec to a faux-patina look while still retaining solid condition throughout and a powerful Cosworth YB under the bonnet. The latest Mk2 is a true all-rounder. A superbly straight two-door shell with a cheeky bit of faux-patina once again, only this time slightly more subtle. Under the bonnet it’s the signature YB turbo. It may be obvious, but many would argue it’s the finest choice possible for a Mk2 Escort. You can lay money that if an old Ford’s going to rot, it’ll be in the sills. And since the sills form a structural part of the body — in a way, they’re the main chassis rails — it’s vital they’re strong. The trouble is, it’s not a straightforward case of chopping one out and slapping a new one on — for a start the car really needs to be braced. But since it is such a focal point, the adjoining areas either need to be repaired first or are majorly affected by the sill’s repair. Few performance Fords have endured as tumultuous an existence as the ultimate special edition Cosworth, the Escort Monte. Built to commemorate Francois Delecour’s victory on the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally, the Monte was initially viewed as something of a curio, and, while it’s true that Ford never struggled to find homes for the 73 examples earmarked for the British market, it’s probably fair to say that it’s only in recent years that the innate value of this, most special of Escort special editions has come to be properly appreciated. One man who has never failed to grasp the worthiness of the Monte is Steven ‘Gibby’ Gibson of Gibby’s Spraying Services in Harthill, Scotland. A serial Ford restorer of some renown, Gibby’s crowning achievement is unquestionably the immaculate Escort Cosworth Monte…

Cast your mind back to the July 2024 edition and you may well remember seeing this unique black Mk1 Transit splashed across these very pages. We use the term splashed deliberately, because, back then, it was little more than a rolling shell with the majority of its constituent parts scattered liberally across the workshop floor like spilled milk. Of course, for an experienced engineering firm like Coventry-based Envisage, this was far from something to cry about, as its skilled team of fabricators and technicians had everything perfectly under control. “When we did the previous Grafters feature, the van was just about to go through the final fit stage of the build, so it looked very different to how it does now,” laughs Envisage’s Mike Madelin, who has been the project…

Steve has known this Mk2 Lotus pretty much all its life, having first owned it back in the early 1970s. “It was later used for rallying but ended up being rolled and reshelled in 1979 using one of the last available factory-built shells,” Steve says, “and I was fortunate to be able to buy the car back again in 1997.” Since then, the 40,000-mile Mk2 has lived a relatively sedate life, having only covered 20,000 miles in the last 32 years. “I’ve kept on top of things and treated the 1558cc twin-cam to electronic ignition and a stainless-steel exhaust,” Steve points out, “I’m hoping to give the original engine a full overhaul over the winter.”…

What’s been done this month: Fixed the Orion and took it to the Retro Rides Gathering Next on the to-do list: Fix the Sierra As much as we love our favourite one-make shows at Classic Ford, when the dates don’t clash there are some multimarque events which have to be regularly attended. The Retro Rides Gathering is always high on the list of must-do shows. And to call this just a show isn’t doing it justice, it truly is a gathering of likeminded enthusiasts and freaks. Having successfully managed to bring my recently-purchased 1976 Mk1 Fiesta S from its previous home in the south of France back to my base in Somerset (see October issue), next came the job of registering the car in the UK. This all seemed straightforward when researching the task beforehand, but there was an unexpected sting in the tail. You have 14 days to tell HMRC after you bring a vehicle into the UK permanently by using the Notification Of Vehicle Arrivals (NOVA) service. With the Sierra’s once controversial hatchback jellymould shape now familiar to car buyers, the unveiling of the new five-door Granada in March 1985 was seen as little more than a natural progression for the manufacturer’s renowned flagship. Admittedly, there was a little kickback due to the lack of an initial estate version, but there were clear benefits to the new-fangled Granada over its traditionally-shaped Mk2 predecessor. Under its swoopy new metalwork, much of the running gear was derived from the smaller Sierra, including the rear suspension and strut-based front set-up, but the Granada stood on its own merits. After the two previous Fordmeets at Squires Café just east of Leeds had to be postponed due to inclement weather this year, all fingers and toes were crossed hoping history wouldn’t repeat itself for the huge end of season meet in September. Fortunately, lady luck was finally on our side and after a month of exceptionally damp Sundays, organiser Simon Shipley and his crew had somehow managed to pick a dry day. Amazingly, the sun even showed its face for a while, too! Fiesta RS1800s are a pretty rare sight these days, but fortunately this often-overlooked model still has its fans. One of these is engineer, Bryn Davies who bought this Tourmaline Green example as a standard car some 18 years ago. Barely recognisable in many aspects today, the Mk3 Fez has undergone a total transformation as the 1800 Zetec has been fully forged and now boasts a T4 turbo, BBX manifold, Pro alloy intercooler, Radtec radiator, Rover Tomcat plenum and Kent Cams fast road camshafts. “I used to work at Roose Motorsport, so I was able to make the bespoke hoses myself,” Bryn says, “I also redrilled the 16 inch rims to fit the Fiesta hubs.” Fitting the ST220 brakes and GAZ coil-overs must have seemed like a walk in the park…

The A B C of tuning J is for… Jetting We all know the benefits of fitting a bigger carb, right? You know, more fuel equals more power, but this will only happen if you get the jetting right. Get it wrong and you could end up with too much fuel, which will never burn or — even worse — not enough fuel, which will cause engine damage. When buying your carb/s, a good retailer should be able to supply a set of jets that will get you somewhere near the correct setting, providing you can tell them the spec of your engine. Daryl has owned this unique Escort 24 years since buying it as an original 1.3 Nimbus camper needing a full resto. When the bodywork was complete he thought on a whim, ‘Why not use my spare Cossie engine in it?’. The YB fitted has typical Cossie specs with an NMS live-mapped YB running around 340 bhp on greens with the usual supporting mods. Some space limitation of the Escort means the header tank had to be cheekily incorporated into the inner wing and a fairly compact 4x4 intercooler and custom radiator have been used. QUERY OF THE MONTH Three-rail upgrade Q I’m building a hybrid Pre-Crossflow/Crossflow 1700 to go in my Anglia 105E. What gearbox would you recommend? I have the original remote three-rail ‘box, and would prefer to use that as it means not chopping into the tunnel. Could I just find a bellhousing to suit? And will the ‘box cope with the new power?
