A London-style ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) for the city of Leeds has been ruled out by councillors but could still be implemented by the government. At a full council meeting, councillors passed a motion opposing the introduction of a zone, despite a local commitment to improving air quality.
In an interview, Conservative councillor, Alan Lamb, stated that the introduction of a ULEZ in Leeds would be “punitive”, adding: “If we were to introduce measures like this, there isn’t a suitable alternative for a lot of people, and it would just be punishing them and add extra tax without any benefit or reward.”
