What began in 1981 as a means to share tools and resources, grew from eight shipwrights into a multifaceted workforce that now hovers around 50. The original members of the co-operative worked out of their trucks on fishing boats. Over time, a timber-frame building was constructed, and business grew to include yachts.
Today, four buildings, totalling 40,000 sqft (3,700m2), and several outside yards, house Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op (PTSC), a multimillion-US dollar service industry in Washington. Clients count on wood, glassfibre, and steel work from a diverse crew of specialists in marine finishes, machinists, mechanics, and electronics technicians. Artisan spar builders, along with system and interior experts, caulkers, and other talents round out the team.
