Uffa Fox regatta next year A major regatta in the Solent next year is set to celebrate the work of Uffa Fox, 50 years after his death. It has been organised by the Royal London YC and Cowes Classic Boat Museum, supported by the Atalanta Owners Association and the Cowes Corinthian YC and forms part of a series of events in Cowes from 18-21 August 2022. Racing will be for dinghies, keelboats and yachts designed by Fox alone. The Classic Boat Museum will hold various events including seminars and an exhibition of Fox’s dinghies. Events will be followed by the Flying Fifteen European championships, organised by the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club from 20-26 August, 2022. The Round the Island Race celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. The first race took place in 1931 with 25 entries. Nine decades later, it is one of the biggest mass-participation events in the world, giving weekend family crews the chance to compete against the sport's biggest names. Records have tumbled and eras come and gone, but the heart of the event – a spectacular, challenging day out for ordinary sailors – remains. Back in 1930, it was Major Cyril Windeler, a member of the Island Sailing Club, who first proposed a handicap race around the Isle of Wight for ‘smaller’ boats, which at the time meant between 5 and 25 tons. Sir Michael Harrison bought International One Design Falcon in 1984 and kept her on the river Orwell in Suffolk where he raced her and also used her as the family cruising yacht. The holy trio of hand tools for a builder of wooden boats comprises the saw, plane and chisel, but of these the saw is by far the most useful. With a saw you can fell trees, shape any part you care to mention, and cut joints that are watertight. The extensive restoration of a yacht not far short of a hundred years old and a hundred foot long can provide a mighty challenge for any established boatyard, however skilled and experienced its labour force might be. And while the difficulties are on another level altogether when undertaking and completing such a project in a distant country with absolutely no previous history of such work, the 1927 Camper and Nicholson ketch Cynara is clear proof that nothing is impossible. Since Woody Allen’s 1979 movie Manhattan, the famous George Gershwin’s symphony is mostly associated to the New York cityscape but, why not transfer it to Paris, in another glamorous movie set? When Frantz Liuzzi began in 1937 to build finely crafted light dinghies and canoes in his workshop of Neuilly, he couldn’t have imagined that two decades later he would be delivering fine and fast runabouts to movie stars like Erroll Flynn. After his canoes had won many trophies on challenging river rapids in France, including during World War Two, when muscle power was more at hand than petrol for nautical sporting activities, in the late 1940s Frantz Liuzzi started a small production of inboard runabouts mostly powered by Italian BPM marine engines made in Milan. FREJA Luke Powell pilot cutter Freja is one of eight Scillonian style pilot cutters built by Luke Powell. She was launched in 2012. The current owners, a husband-and-wife crew, increasing in age, are now looking to sell. They have sailed Freja 25,000 miles in their ownership, mostly double-handed, in the west country, around Ireland, Scotland several seasons, Brittany, Spain and Portugal, and along the Swedish coast. The yacht is 42ft (12.8m) long, gaff rigged with mainsail, staysail, jib, outer jib and topsail, and is equipped with a 35hp Beta Marine diesel. Downs Road Boatyard sitting, as it does, on a suburban road in the pretty town of Maldon, seems anomalous these days of irate neighbours and glass-fronted new-builds. Given its location, it’s a surprisingly big site, sloping gently down to the River Blackwater. There has been boatbuilding here since about 1885, and in the 1970s, a number of locals, including the cartoonist Mike Peyton an Arthur Keeble, bought the plot to keep their boats on. One of the original syndicate was the father of the Jim Dines, who with wife Catherine, owns and runs the yard today. In terms of local continuity, the story is amazing. Martha and Primrose are the middle names of my two daughters who are a continuous source of inspiration for me. The vessel, Martha Primrose, is a spectacular 50ft (15.1m) gaff yawl designed by Ashley Butler and me as a cruising yacht and built in 2012 by the many skilled hands of Butler and Co at their former premises at Old Mill Boatyard, Dartmouth, a quaint yard nestled into the banks of a creek between the overhanging oaks. I recently became reacquainted with her after some time apart and with it has brought some reflections on the nature of wooden boats. During his 99 years, HRH Prince Philip, the longest serving prince consort in British history, made a significant contribution to many walks of life from commerce to the environment, sport, industry, science and youth challenges. BONHAMS Ye Gods, it’s an ECOD Simply titled “First Home,” the subject of this watercolour and gouache by pre-eminent marine artist Montague Dawson (1890-1973) defied experts until it was spotted by east coast sailor Iain Stubbs, who’s convinced it’s one of the fabled East Coast One Designs penned by 1908 Olympic gold medallist GU Laws. With its list of victories and world records over decades, BPM has made history in motorboat racing. The Italian firm was founded in 1931, when Messrs Botta and Puricelli in Milan (the B, the P and the M of the name) joined forces to design and make engines for sport boats and challenge the existing, mostly American, brands dominating the field, particularly in competition. The venture was an immediate success. Just one year later, BPM won the 430km (267 mile) race from Pavia to Venice on the River Po. The strength of BPM engines came from their design.
