James Dodds’ huge, compelling, luminous, meticulous studies of clinkerbuilt traditional workboats have, over the last decade, become an East Coast institution and his exhibitions at Messums’ Cork Street gallery something to look forward to. The current show, until 22 October, spreads his geographical inspirations to include boats of Salcombe, St Ives, Shetland and this Orcadian Yole (oil on linen 56 x 48in, £16,500). New works also include triptychs, as well as ‘close-ups’ of parts of boats – often the bow, sometimes the stern. Limited-edition prints of harbours or boatyards (see p84), typically around £400, are also on show. See also Books, p70.
