September 1978, Daily Mirror International, Donington Park
Apparently, there were 50,000 spectators at Donington Park for the September International meeting in 1978, with the big race of the day featuring a top-class entry. The main attraction was a showdown between the new 500cc World Champion Kenny Roberts riding a 750 Yamaha, and the man that he’d deposed – Barry Sheene on the 650cc Suzuki XR23, an over-bored version of the square-four RG500 Grand Prix machine. Other GP stars present included Dutchman Will Hartog, also on a Heron Suzuki 650, Teuvo Länsivuori on an RG500 and Takazumi Katayama on a Yamaha TZ750. Top Brits included Dave Potter, John Newbold, Tom Herron, Ron Haslam and Mick Grant.
Potter led the first of the race’s 24 laps, before Sheene and Roberts came past…
