There’s a fair case for calling the ’55 and ’56 models the best-looking cars Dodge ever made. In earlier years, it had been pursuing a conservative and risk-averse styling policy which finally ran out of steam; the public wanted, and could afford, something more glamorous. The 1957-59 Dodges were longer, lower and more dramatic, but for straightforward, clean and modern elegance, the ’55s and ’56s were perfection. And yet, they are almost never encountered on this side of the Atlantic. Total production of all models for 1955 was 276,000, which was a paltry figure next to similarly priced Mercurys (330,000) and slightly pricier Pontiacs (554,000), but it does mean there ought to be a few thousand still around.
