‘CINDERELLA MURDER’
Barmaid Linda Cook, 24, was raped and killed on wasteland in Portsmouth on 9 December 1986. Left half-naked, her jaw and spine were broken, her crushed throat imprinted with the logo from the killer’s shoes.
As police hunted for the owner of the shoes, the case was dubbed the ‘Cinderella Murder’.
Off-duty sailor Michael Shirley, 18, was convicted. But, in 2003, 16 years later, aged 34, he was cleared when fresh DNA evidence excluded him.
Meanwhile, Linda’s real killer has never been brought to justice.
