Ripping open his presents, my son Amos, two, was squealing with excitement.
It was Christmas morning last year, and me, Amos, my husband Paul, and our seven-month old daughter Elsie-Mae, were all gathered around our tree. ‘This one’s for you,’ Paul said, handing a box to Amos.
It was a lava lamp, and Amos was in love with his new toy.
Tucking him into his cot that night, I plugged in the new lava lamp across the room.
And, ever since, Amos had been mesmerised by the lamp, with its glowing colours of dancing wax.
‘Sweet dreams,’ I whispered one night earlier this year, leaving Amos asleep under a reddish glow.
Tip-toeing downstairs, I settled on the sofa with Paul.
