New data from Tourism Research Australia has revealed Australia’s RV and camping visitor economy is going from strength to strength, reaching record numbers for the year ending March 2018. The latest figures have revealed that national overnight domestic camping trips have reached 11.84 million (rolling annual) in a 3.5 per cent increase from March 2017. The NSW Government has slashed the cost of registering caravans and camper trailers by 40 per cent. The reduction in the motor vehicle tax for private caravan owners will come into effect from 1 November 2018. In this issue, one of the caravans I reviewed is a Nova Metrolink single axle on-road caravan. An option available was a grey water tank which the dealer had chosen to fit. A little unusual given it’s an on-road caravan, but a welcome addition nonetheless. For decades now, grey water tanks have been standard on motorhomes and fifth wheelers to give them full self- containment — something by definition that includes grey water containment. AIRBAG DEBATE Q Hi CW, Some folks tell me that they have rear airbags on their tug and therefore don’t need a WDH. Here’s a question: is travelling in small-sized caravans still possible? A cursory glance through many caravan dealerships suggests no, from an availability point of view. However, a bit of tenacity will uncover some brand-new caravans under 5m (16ft 5in), for sale. Indeed, there are even some of shorter length, such as this Olympic Sprinter pop-top, which comes in with an external body length of just 3.91m (12ft 10in). Whether the Caravelair Antarés is a good fit for Australia is a very good question and something oft heard more as a statement in the negative. Whilst this van really isn’t a candidate for some of the rougher Australian outback tracks, sealed highway travel is a very different matter. While welcoming the 40 per cent reduction in private motor vehicle tax on caravans and camper trailers, there are other pressing issues affecting RVers in New South Wales according to the Australian Caravan Club (ACC). The NSW government says the 40 per cent reduction in motor vehicle tax for private caravan owners for caravans up to 4.5 tonnes will come into effect on 1 November 2018. ACC Chairman Craig Humphrey says it will be appreciated by families, pensioners, and self-funded retirees, but there are other areas affecting the RV community which need addressing. “Our club acknowledges that NSW has some of the most generous registration provisions for pensioners in any state," he said in a statement. Nova Metrolink is a van with an interesting name – well, to me at least. I thought Nova’s design team had been clever; you know, a van that links the metropolitan cities. However, it just happens to be the name of the street where Nova’s factory is located. That said, this particular Metrolink is in some ways better suited to city and town driving than most, given its external length of 5.56m (18ft 3in) and only having a single axle. In addition to that, the ATM of just 2376kg gets under the 'Prado limit' without any trouble at all. It’s remarkable how much a town name can influence us. I guess all the past experiences of a place distill our impression, so it's no surprise that the Jurgens Jindabyne struck a chord with me. Nestled into the lee of the Snowy Mountains, the town promises excitement and a holiday atmosphere and, of course, the evocative image of hardy mountain folk. And let’s not forget, when blanketed in snow, it’s a pretty cool place. To me, the Jurgens version is pretty cool, too. Hi there Caravan World, I have a 2014 Jurgens van that I purchased in 2016. I installed a Projecta IC2500 battery charger, and apparently this is a smart charger (multi stage). I was recently contemplating the addition of a small portable generator for the times that the solar won't be able to recharge due to the weather. I have a 120Ah lead crystal battery with 300W of solar. I only intend to charge the battery, not run appliances. I contacted Projecta and was informed that it is not recommended to run a smart charger with a generator, hence I have shelved my plans until I do some research. ON THE ROAD TO SAFETY My wife and I have been caravanning for the past 22 years, and over the last 18 years we have been travelling between three to six months per year. During this time we have seen many caravan accidents and near misses. After discussions with many fellow vanners, the talk always turns to weights and speed. It would appear that many vanners carry more than the kitchen sink, and wish to be at their destination yesterday. On a number of occasions I have been ridiculed for travelling at 85-90km/h. With that out of the way, here’s a cheap and easy camping twist on a popular Japanese-style pancake that’s totally delicious.
