In the April 2012 issue, we tested the new entry-level model in the Toyota Fortuner range. The new 2,5-litre D-4D VNT Raised Body, which retailed for R332 000, was a more affordable 4x2 model.
We were suitably impressed with the smaller-capacity engine, commenting: “In day-to-day driving conditions, you’re unlikely to miss the bigger engine’s wider torque curve. Even its zero to 100 km/h time of 12,7 seconds is not too far off what you’d achieve with the 3,0-litre.”
This model’s frugal consumption figure, thanks to the smaller-capacity engine, also impressed us. “On our fuel route, the Fortuner achieved 8,7-litre/100 km, beating the 3,0-litre by 1,5-litres/100 km, which equated to a useful extra 135 km from a tank.
