Park all thoughts of potential future AMG-tuned hot versions of EQ models. This new entry-level electric crossover is very much from the other Mercedes tradition, the non-AMG one, that prioritises comfort, refinement, safety and serenity above performance. Outside, it’s a lot like a GLA with a blanked-off grille. Inside, a GLA with different information on the digital instruments. Under the skin it’s a straightforward EV set-up. And to drive, it’s a fine anti-aggression tool, comfortable and cosseting. The new C-Class is nearly with us, looking a lot like every C-Class that preceded it, and bound to be similarly outshone by the rival 3-series and overshadowed by the big-brother E-Class, not to mention Merc’s SUV tsunami. But the current C-Class is a fine car, and currently excellent value. The headline-grabbing AMG versions – the six-cylinder, all-wheel-drive C43 and the eight-cylinder rear-wheel-drive C63 – can be a lot of fun, with more finesse than previous sledgehammer-like C-AMGs. Who’d have thought it – I miss my 130-mile commute. Well, bits of it: those miles decompressing before getting home to the kids, the current-affairs radio briefings, and really getting under the skin of my long-term test car. For obvious reasons the EQC is grossly underemployed and a bit of an enigma. Due to the impossibility of parking near a lamppost charger in my own street, I tend to top up the e-Tron at some nearby Source London 7kW points. It’s dark when I arrive for the first time, as I’m a cheapskate looking to take advantage of the overnight discount when costs are capped at four hours between 8pm and 7am. This 3.8-litre V8 is the last Ferrari engine that will be used by Maserati now that the two companies, once so close, are going their separate ways. The home-brewed replacements that will debut in the MC20 will doubtless be pretty special, but they won’t be this. The Zoe’s list of irritants is growing. I’ve previously mentioned the harsh ride and high driving position. To this you can add the infotainment system’s occasional refusal to recognise my phone; the ease with which you can snag yourself on the sharp leading edges of the doors; the rear door handles that easily defeat smaller hands; and the tough cabin plastics. But all of this is forgiven and forgotten the moment the Zoe zips off at the start of another journey. Why? Because the Zoe is full of tail-up and zesty character. ‘A square peg in a round hole’ makes a good visual analogy for the awkward and idiosyncratic, so it was a brave watch designer who first put a round dial in a square case. A watch’s hands (you’ll have noticed) move in circles, so a square case leaves some redundant dial in each corner and has edges that can fray cuffs, assuming you still wear them. Wind it up and the Radical can effortlessly separate you from the contents of your stomach and power of rational thought Plenty of makers claim to produce a ‘race car with number plates’, and while these usually offer very extreme performance, it always comes with the caveat ‘for a road car’. I eventually bought a new Elise in 2000 and it has proved to be an enduring pleasure over the past 20 years. To live with the Arteon is to fall in love with it. I ran one for six months in 2018 and it was impeccable. Because as much as we might dream of rear-drive, natural aspiration, a clutch pedal and hydraulic steering, what you often actually need is comfort and convenience. And that’s this big VW’s forte. Don’t be so fast as to declare these ‘last chance’ saloons. It’s hardly the body style of the moment, and their engines are far less electrified than the zeitgeist demands, and you may well question why anyone actually needs a luxury saloon right now; exactly what business meetings are these executives in such a hurry to attend? Just when the car world needs some original thinking, especially for cities, Citroën has announced ‘a new urban mobility solution’ that is genuinely innovative. The world’s one-time boldest car maker is getting brave again. That twinkle in the old Parisian eye is back. The new Ami is a small electric-powered two-seat city ‘car’ that sets new standards for compactness, manoeuvrability, low cost and ease of use. In France it can be driven without a licence by anyone over 14 (16 in most other European countries). It can be leased, on a long-term contract, for less than £20 a month. Lockdown means I haven’t done many miles in the Discovery Sport this month; it’s been parked up looking a bit downcast and ignored. Still, being stuck at home means I had the chance to check out a hitherto unexplored dimension of Disco ownership, the Land Rover Remote app. After linking your car to your InControl account using the VIN number, the app allows you to check the car’s location, its fuel range, to see if it’s locked and alarmed, and the status of things like tyre pressures and AdBlue levels.
