Considering that DS Automobiles is marketed as the cutting edge of French technology and luxury, it’s had precious little to show for it in the way of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) since the first bespoke DS model came along in 2017. Now, however, that’s set to change with the introduction of the all-electric E-Tense version of the DS 3 Crossback. It’s the first step to the French manufacturer switching to an entirely BEV or PHEV range of models from 2025. Either McLaren has been thinking outside the box or it hasn’t read the script, because the specification of this new McLaren GT veers so far off-piste from a trad grand tourer’s that someone should probably call mountain rescue. Not that the GT’s ingredients are radical, because it follows the same formula as every McLaren produced since 2011’s MP4-12C, and its building blocks trip from the tongues of car literates like a primary schooler might recite the alphabet: carbonfibre tub, mid-mounted twin-turbo V8, seven-speed-dual clutch gearbox, dihedral doors. After six months and 5247 miles I’m still not sure what to make of the Cupra Ateca. It’s an immediately familiar car with an odd logo that follows a traditional and very well-trodden performance upgrade path. Its combination of presence and performance should work a treat, but in reality leaves me oddly indifferent. Simon Thompson Let’s start with the good stuff. The Cupra is a brisk, versatile, well-equipped and easy-to-live-with family car. Hardly surprising when you hook up the rather excellent Ateca to the equally excellent powertrain from the Golf R. Tricky Johnny, ergonomics. I have long railed against cockpits which combine manual transmission with a thumping great centre console box, the thoughtfully padded lid of which conspires to clonk your elbow with every throw of the gearlever. Never mind nicely weighted steering and a crisp turn-in, some fool(s) actually sat down and designed this blatantly obstructive irritation into existence, negating all such driving niceties at a stroke. What’s so great about a container with a lid anyway? In my house that’s simply a recipe for losing stuff; out of sight, buy a new one. Great article about Ferdinand Piëch in CAR, October 2019. As a regular reader since the ’70s I’ve noted many references to his greatness and forward thinking. I remember when he had two teams looking at a six-cylinder engine of around 3.0 litres, one from Audi and also from VW. Audi developed a fine traditional V6 and VW the VR6, a very narrow-angle six not much longer than a four. This allowed VW to put the six into a transverse layout with a short bonnet and have better packaging in the engine bay and also led to a VR5 five-cylinder. It also led to the W12 and W16 used in Bentley and Bugatti. His ambition seemed to know no bounds. Strange that no one knows his involvement in the Dieselgate scandal…

A group of MPs have taken a break from squabbling about Brexit to declare that tougher restrictions on driving while using a mobile phone are needed. The data shows you’re just as dangerous with a hand-free hook-up as you are with your mobile clamped to your head. So they want harsher penalties, tougher enforcement, and the same social stigma attached to using your phone while behind the wheel (even hands-free) as drink driving. I couldn’t agree more – and yet they make no mention of the danger of the in-built touchscreen many new cars now have. As chance has it, my sister owns an earlier Ford Focus estate, so when she came to visit recently I couldn’t help but compare it with my 2019 edition. Hers is a somewhat hard-used, lived-in Mk1. As an artist she regularly lugs around show stands, potting paraphernalia and bulky boxes of tableware to exhibitions and galleries. It’s a proper workhorse. The figures are impressive enough. The Porsche Taycan is a two-tonne car capable of 0-62mph in under three seconds, with braking power to match. The front calipers on the Turbo and Turbo S have 10 pistons apiece, with six on the 4S. A big stop in a Taycan feels like galloping into a patio door. But it’s not only discs and pads doing the stopping, it’s regenerative braking too – e-motors go into reverse to recharge the batteries and shed speed. Despite all the hardware, the algorithms and the blend between regen and regular braking, it’s impressive just how natural the feedback feels. When you’re done with scaring the locals it can resume being discreet and comfortable VW cracked the all-wheel-drive hot hatch long before any other brand, so much so that more than 200,000 have been sold. So, when VW R boss Jost Capito calls for reinforcements for the ageing Golf R, it’s natural that the trendy T-Roc SUV is the first suggestion. The formula is quite a familiar one. You find yourself trying to push the pedal through the firewall in the quest for more zest The problem with this second-generation offering is that it only serves to reinforce one’s suspicions that, from a design perspective, Nissan yet again doesn’t – to paraphrase Joni Mitchell – know what it’s got ’til it’s gone. The ongoing plod of the unfathomably popular Qashqai aside, we’ve witnessed, of late, a truly interesting Micra downgraded to execrable world car; a utilitarian X-Trail re-cast as corporate whore; and now a Juke become more box than Wurlitzer. What exactly is it you’re buying when you pay 70 grand for the new five-door version of the 8-series? Is it a car that’s more practical than the cheaper 6-series Gran Turismo with the same engine? ‘Generic’ gets a bad press. But surely something being typical of its type is only a bad thing if that type is a bad thing. And that doesn’t apply to VW Group crossovers, which are all somewhere on a spectrum that runs from good to excellent. Having driven a lot of VW Group crossovers (starting way before they were called crossovers) I know how to set them up in a way that suits me: which drive mode to use, when to turn to the paddleshifters, how the sat-nav works, and the audio. Once, while trying to give me a massage, a masseur commented that I seemed tense. The more I tried to relax, the tenser I became. Inevitably, it ended with the masseur suggesting I take a hike. The C5 Aircross’ ride is like having a massage. Or like a normal person having a massage. There’s activity, but it’s relaxing. You feel the suspension working away at each corner, absorbing the shock of a bump, calming the drop of a wheel into a pothole, the body pitching in a pillowy way.
