IGNITION SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
Now that mechanical distributors, contact breaker points and rotor arms have been relegated to the history books, ignition systems require considerably less maintenance than in the past. Inspect all wiring for corrosion, cracks, loose connections and signs of overheating. Should the coil be mounted directly onto the plug, it will need to be removed to gain access. Checking spark plug gaps with a feeler gauge, as pictured, is a wise idea, even when fitting new ones. Many of the latest gasoline direct injection (GDI) models require the spark plug position to be aligned with the fuel injector. Therefore, double-check any fitting specifications, otherwise the engine may not run correctly and illuminate an engine management lamp, which is an MOT failure point.
