THE ’50S AND ’60S WERE THE MOTOR CAR’S BELLE Epoque, as the auto business threw off the shackles of wartime gloom and designers strove for beautiful shapes to reflect the confidence and optimism of new enlightened times. From D-Type to E-Type, GTB to GTO, Miura to Mercedes SL, DS to Duetto Spider, it was a golden age. There were no cars more beautiful than Ferraris in this progressive period, and no Ferrari more elegant than the 275 GTB/4.
A great Ferrari must, of course, be gorgeous. To my eyes, the 275 GTB/4 is sublime: small, dainty, long bonnet, pert rear, upturned tail, curved hips, softly styled, so simple and so perfect in stance and poise, a Pininfarina masterpiece.
