AS THE death toll from the recent devastating floods in the Eastern Cape has risen to 88, two CPUT lecturers have volunteered to assist emergcy relief efforts. One of the youngest victims is believed to be 1-year-old. THE Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) say they’ve been made aware of deductions imposed on members’ wages for rent after the officers moved out of the barracks in the Western Cape, leaving them with only R28 in their bank accounts. POLICE Minister Senzo Mchunu has revealed that SAPS spent an estimated R131.5 million on paid sick leave in the 2023/24 financial year. Responding to parliamentary questions, Mchunu said 618 SAPS employees were on paid sick leave for a period exceeding six months during the financial year. The issue of excessive sick leave within SAPS is not new. As far back as 2012, Parliament flagged it during oversight visits, noting a recurring pattern and raising concerns about the well-being of officers. THE SANDF announced the arrival at Bram Fischer International Airport yesterday of the third group of soldiers returning from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (SAMIDRC).
