A MANENBERG man accused of viciously stabbing his pregnant girlfriend to death has been sent to prison after making his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court. Moegamat Ghaliem Phillips, 42, made a brief appearance last Tuesday for the murder of Amirah Abrahams, where he was informed that the State would be opposing his release on bail. Phillips was arrested by police last Sunday as detectives swarmed the murder scene where the 32-year-old mother of two was found with multiple stab wounds to her body. ELECTRICITY and Energy Minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has warned that the high cost of electricity is a ticking time bomb that could trigger unrest and undermine the government. He addressed the issue while highlighting that Eskom has successfully kept the lights on uninterrupted for more than 200 days. Ramokgopa said he had been briefed by Eskom officials who attended the public hearings regarding the tariff increases, where input was made regarding the pressure faced by vulnerable groups, including the poor and the elderly. A Manenberg resident is demanding justice for his pitbull after the pet was shot in the eye during a police raid. The shooting in Peta Court on Friday saw angry residents shout at heavily armed officers as they questioned why the pitbull pup was shot. CIVIL rights group AfriForum has threatened legal action against the Information Regulator if it proceeds with its application to prevent the publication of the 2024 matric results. This comes after the regulator got an order against the Department of Basic Education (DBE) that the matric results not be published in newspapers to protect the learners’ information. However, the department said it would go ahead with their usual publication of results. The results will be out in January. The department said that it was in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) by no longer revealing the first and last names of applicants.
