A stove that was not switched off after load shedding is believed to be the cause of a fire that killed a mother and her 16-month-old baby in Kensington’s informal settlement, Koe-Koe town in the early hours yesterday. The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the services were alerted at about 2.50am that a structure was on fire and a family trapped inside. Carelse said crews from Epping, Brooklyn and Milnerton were dispatched to the scene and found the bodies of the 32-year-old mother, Haley Williams, and her baby boy, who had succumbed to fatal burn wounds. While Karpowership SA’s final Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is being prepared for the company’s second attempt to get its proposed gas-to-power projects off the ground in Saldanha Bay, Port of Ngqura and Richards Bay, environmental groups are opposing the projects and argue that environmental authorisation must be refused again. Karpowerships’s application for environmental authorisation was initially refused by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) on a number of grounds, including that the environmental impact assessment did not comply with the public consultation and information-gathering requirements. In its second attempt, the company said all perceived gaps in its initial applications were addressed along with an enhanced public participation process that saw more than 1 300 community members and stakeholders attend in-person and virtual public meetings last month. A local non-profit organisation whose mission is to assist women and children affected by gender-based violence has started a project to ensure the safety of children during the festive period. Ihata Care Group will be providing a safe space for vulnerable children on the Cape Flats. At the weekend the organisation launched its Safe Haven Project. The group has also been managing the Beitun Nur home in Schaapkraal for the past three years. Beitun Nur is a home for young girls affected by gender-based violence. The organisation also runs a shelter for abused women in Heideveld. The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has donated more than 400 furniture and other household items previously used in ministerial homes to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community based organisations (CBOs) assisting vulnerable women and children. Minister Patricia de Lille, together with the DPWI’s Cape Town regional office, has been handing over unused furniture to the organisations across the Western Cape over the past few weeks. “The furniture has been stored in the DPWI regional office storage for many years, not being used, as it was previously used at houses in the parliamentary villages and ministerial homes in Cape Town,” De Lille said. Cape Town-based defence and aerospace company Milkor is paving the way for SA’s entry into the competitive drone warfare technological race with the launch of the Milkor 380 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the largest such aircraft to be developed in Africa. The provincial Department of Human Settlements has boosted security at its properties over the festive season and warned that it would engage authorities to act swiftly to prevent land invasions and illegal occupations of Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses. Human Settlements MEC Tertuis Simmers said that over the past three years, the department had experienced more than 1 600 invasions of land earmarked for human settlement development across the province. Simmers said the department had spent just over R100 million to secure its properties and to prevent invasions during that period. During this same period, he said more than 100 Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses had been vandalised by illegal occupiers, costing the department a further R24m in repairs. LESS than a week after the schools been closed for the fourth term, Imperial Primary school in Beacon Valley in Mitchells Plain has been burgled and 15 tablets stolen. The incident allegedly occurred late at night when the area was experiencing load shedding. The Cape Flats Safety Forum chairperson Abbie Isaacs confirmed that this was not the first incident to occur at the school. He said they were concerned that in other areas load shedding was a contributing factor to these incidents. “As the CFSF we condemn these acts of burglary, especially in our learning centres, in the strongest terms.
