RESIDENTS in Zandvlei have expressed disappointment as the City would no longer deliver the new weed harvester that was expected at the end of June. Instead, a replacement tender was advertised on Friday after the initial contractor failed to deliver. In February, Save the Zandvlei petitioners cast doubt on the expected date of the weed harvester delivery after it merged that the service provider had hit a snag on available working capital in December and was engaging bankers. The new weed harvester delivery was expected in August last year, then December, and was later postponed to early this year. THE family of the brothers allegedly poisoned by their father have called for justice as they try to understand the motive. One child is recovering in hospital. Three brothers from Ratanda Primary School and Khanya Lesedi Secondary School in Heidelberg, Lehlogonolo Khoabane,16, Katleho Khoabane, 13, and Tebogo Ngcongwane. 6, died after drinking energy drinks allegedly given to them by their father on Thursday morning. He reportedly gave four of his children the drinks while they were preparing for school. The fifth child declined the drink. Four of them allegedly consumed the drink after arriving at school. FRUSTRATED with the ongoing gang violence in their community, fervent Hanover Park community leaders, residents and community-based organisations staged a march calling for a united effort in the fight against volatile gang wars. Yesterday’s march began at the community’s central point with a joint speech by local leaders and faith organisations. Speaking to the Cape Argus, resident Errol Davies said that last month residents bore witness to at least 20 killings in the community, a testament to the dire need for more concentrated efforts to be directed to eradicate gang violence in the community. THE court case against the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) over seven unplaced learners in the Metro East district is expected to reach a conclusion this week. Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) instituted an urgent court application against the WCED on May 9, on behalf of the seven learners. It was heard in the Western Cape High Court on Friday. The Metro East Education district includes Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Kuils River, Macassar, Strand and Somerset West. This was the first time the EELC initiated litigation against the department over admissions. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Neliswa Nkonyeni offered her condolences to the families of 16 people who lost their lives in a “gruesome” multi-vehicle crash that occurred allegedly after a truck overturned on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
