I BEGAN my journey with Chinese language around 15 years ago, when I selected it as an extra subject during my international relations bachelor’s degree.
Why IR? My father, Frans Jordaan, had been a diplomat in Germany, so I was born in Bonn, West Germany (Germany being divided in 1985).
I had a multilingual education (with English and Afrikaans at home, and German at school), which continued during my father’s diplomatic term in Namibia (11-year-old me was lucky to have met Nelson Mandela, another inspiration of mine, on his first presidential visit to Windhoek).
Later, during high school in South Africa, I also studied French.
Mandarin, as a language, ignited a passion within me. I enjoyed the challenge and was excited to add something new and different to my life.…
