Working at a running magazine, where being a runner is part of every job description, can mess with your head. When you’re immersed in it daily, running seems important. To non-runners, it’s just a hobby (and one they mostly can’t relate to). But even if you don’t work at a running magazine, with all the apps and gizmos and training plans and podcasts out there, it’s easy to get caught up in thinking that one should run more, train harder, be faster. The purpose of our fitness issue (and of Molly Hurford’s excellent piece, “The 7 Habits of Highly Healthy Runners”) is to let you know that running is an excellent conduit to fitness, but also that any running is good. In May 2022, controversy swirled when a six-year-old from Kentucky completed Cincinnati, Ohio’s Flying Pig Marathon (in eight hours and 35 minutes). Running and physical activity are very important for children, but physicians and other experts caution that there is such a thing as too much, too soon. Youth participation in marathons and ultramarathons is growing; a 2010 study published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine found that by 2007, 310 kids aged seven to 17 had completed the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis-St. Paul. And a 2021 study found 7,775 ultra finishes (defined as any race distance longer than the marathon’s 42.2 km) by athletes younger than 18, with most being at least 16, but some as young as 10 (or even younger). “Every time I come back to the event, it’s like going to a wedding and seeing all of my old running friends and favourite volunteers,” says Michael-Lucien Bergeron, the winner of last year’s Fredericton half-marathon. Back in 2018, Bergeron, who is from P.E.I., attempted the Guiness World Record for joggling (running while juggling) the half-marathon, but missed it by a minute. (He successfully set the record later that year, at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.) The Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic is an excellent option for runners looking to escape the winter doldrums. With a temperate climate due to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream, the average temperature on these volcanic islands is 17 C in winter and 24 C in summer—one of the many reasons the Azores are often referred to as Europe’s best kept secret. Governed by Portugal, the islands are defined by dramatic volcanic landscapes, seaside villages, mountain trails, lagoons and expansive green pastures. For athlete and activist Tréchelle Bunn, who grew up immersed in the Indigenous teachings around movement as a form of healing, sports have always been intrinsic to life. The concept of the medicine wheel incorporates four quadrants (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual), which are balanced by means of physical movement. But Bunn says she usually resisted her dad’s attempts to get her to join him on three-mile runs to get fit for hockey, and that those who know of her love-hate relationship with running were a little surprised when she decided to organize a half-marathon. Still, she instinctively recognized the power of running to bring people together in a common cause. When Emily Peters saw an Instagram post about a new run club that was forming in her neighbourhood, she knew immediately that she had to join. “It was one of those where-has-this-been-all-my-life? moments,” says Peters, who is now the club co-ordinator. The Fernwood Social Run Club was founded in January 2022 by Dylan Joss, who had just moved to Victoria’s Fernwood neighbourhood. Joss was seeking a sense of community and accountability, and, thanks to social media and word of mouth, the crew quickly picked up steam. When it comes to preparing myself for a fast 5,000m or 10,000m, I have found that I respond best to a healthy dose of hills and long workouts. Hills are essential for building and maintaining speed, power and form year-round, and they also help 25 laps on the track feel relaxed and efficient. Long workouts that are packed with many repeats are also needed to get myself comfortable with running hard for a long time.
