Joshua Cheptegei breaks Bekele’s 5,000m world record
On Aug. 14, the 2019 10,000m world champion, Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, broke Kenenisa Bekele’s world record in the 5,000m at the Monaco Diamond League, running 12:35.36. Cheptegei, who also owns the 5K road and 15,000m world records, charmed the running world by remembering to stop his watch after his historic accomplishment and posting his run on Strava.
Bekele’s record, set in Hengelo, Ethiopia, in 2004, was 12:37.35.
At press time, Cheptegei was planning to contest Bekele’s 10,000m world record of 26:17.53 (set 15 years ago) in Valencia, Spain, on Oct. 7.
