St Austell is located a mile inland from the stunning south coast and it makes the perfect base for a family camping holiday. It is a medium-sized town with a population of 20,000, built, literally and metaphorically, on clay. If you are solo camping and just need somewhere as an overnight stopover, finding a suitable campsite is fairly easy. The most important thing to consider is the location and whether it's in the right place for your journey. Beyond that, decent toilets and showers, and maybe a pub within walking distance, will probably be enough. But when it comes to finding a site for a longer family holiday there are lots more factors to consider. One of my gran’s favourite sayings was “waste not, want not”. And, for their latest tent collection, I reckon Vango’s product designers have been taking advice from their own Scottish grannies. The new Skye 500 is part of the Glasgowbased company’s CLR tent range, which tackles waste by reusing surplus fabric from the manufacture of other tents instead of throwing the offcuts in the bin. It’s an ingenious approach and, coupled with the use of 70D polyester made from single-use plastic, it makes the CLR one of the most sustainable tent ranges on the market from any brand. The Robens brand seems to have cornered the market in creating stunningly good-looking tents that provide technical tent-level spec. And the Klondike PRS is another to add to the list.
