RP Overland, the Yorkshire-based builder of off-road, off-grid Mercedes-based luxury campervans, has unveiled its latest innovation – a campervan that you can give voice instructions to. Using an iPad and RP’s new Smart Assist, you can now talk to your campervan! If there has been a trend in new campervans over the last 12 months, it is four-wheel drive vehicles, which now feature not just from specialist brands but many of the mainstream makers, too. One of the newcomers in this off-road arena is Weinsberg with its new Mercedes Sprinter-based X-Pedition. We attended the launch of this ’van in Germany last summer and it was certainly a glitzy affair. TOP SERVICE STATION NAMED A motorway service station best known for its farm shop, locally sourced food and beautiful surroundings has been named the best in the UK. Gloucester Services on the M5 came top in the survey by Campervan rental provider, CamperDays. On the face of it, this looks like another one of those continental campervans with a fixed bed at the back, a half-dinette at the front and a washroom and kitchen in the middle. Same old, same old. But hold on a minute… Most campervans of this ilk are really two-berths in terms of sleeping accommodation with four travel seats for a bit more versatility, then perhaps the possibility of turning the dinette into an extra bed for a grandchild who might (a) have to be pre-teens in terms of size or (b) able to sleep without complaint on a mattress with more ridges than the Dolomites. It had started to become a little bit of a problem; having lived in Scotland for 15 years, we still hadn’t properly visited any of its beautiful islands. Yes, we had ventured onto Skye a couple of times, but it’s not the same if you can just cross a bridge to reach it. What I’m talking about here are islands that you have to sail, fly or swim to. It was the star of last September’s Caravan Salon Düsseldorf and it has now been crowned Campervan of the Year. It’s called Genius which, for once, might not be overstating things too much. So what’s all the fuss about? Put simply, Malibu (Carthago’s sub-brand that builds all of its campervans) has added a GRP pod onto the rear of an L2 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, taking it from 5.93m to 6.40m long. It isn’t the first company to do something like this (Dehler, followed by Karmann and then Auto-Sleepers did similar in the 1990s on VW T4s) but the execution here is so good that it looks like a product of Mercedes itself. OPTIMATE 6 BATTERY CHARGER Whether you have 12V running through your veins or like to get an expert to change a light bulb, there are some devices that make a job quite easy. OptiMate sells a whole range of battery chargers and testers, including this OptiMate 6 charger. It is part of OptiMate’s Silver Series, which means it might be able to restore some batteries (down to 0.5V) as well as charge, optimise and maintain. Bronze-level chargers are designed for maintenance only, while the Gold-level versions have even more features, like retaining settings for when accessories are fitted.
