With the lockdowns of 2020 now, thankfully, a distant memory, the summer of ’22 has felt like a massive opportunity to play catch-up, and it seems enthusiasm to do so has been unparalled. There were many things us campervanners missed about normal life, but the lack of shows and festivals seems to have been a biggie. Everyone loves live music and entertainment. Regulars to the Motorhome & Campervan Show, Season Finale, which takes place in Lincoln each September, will know that the flypast from the RAF Air Events Team is an annual highlight. Ecowagon, the specialist in high-end VW campervans from Portreath in Cornwall, has appeared on the latest series of the TV show, Million Pound Motorhomes, on Channel 5. The show, which aired on 31 July, can be viewed on catch-up. Ecowagon has been converting VW Transporters since 2012 and started out by converting old builders’ vans and upcycling them into usable campervans. Within the last two years the company says it has gone from strength to strength and it now regularly builds campers costing in excess of £100k. The Cornish converter has also been part of a Top Gear feature on its digital media and first attracted the attention of Channel 5 team at the NEC Motorhome Show, where it went on to feature on Today at the Motorhome Show.…

Speeds dates back to 1997, specialising in prestige and luxury cars. However, like many companies in the pandemic, it decided to branch out into campervan conversions during lockdown. Traders gearing up for a busy September Dealers and accessory retailers are preparing for a bumper month as Warners Shows squeezes three events into the next few weeks. The South West Motorhome & Campervan Show is taking place at the Bath & West Showground in Shepton Mallet, 9 – 11 September, and is set to welcome several new traders. Somerset Campervan Company, Taylored Campervans, Sterling Automotive, P&P Campers and Winchester Caravans are all first timers at the Somerset event; meanwhile, southern-based dealers such as Bilbo’s and Highbridge Caravan Centre are set to return for the first time since the pandemic. Xbus – described as an ‘urban all-rounder’ – is a modular electric vehicle that can be a minibus, pick-up, van, tipper – or even a campervan. That’s despite an overall length of under 4m and an empty weight of less than 800kg. It is powered by a 15kWh battery, with the possibility of adding exchangeable additional batteries of up to a further 30kWh. Its power output is quoted as 56kW (75bhp). Meeting the criteria of the L7e-B2 light vehicle class (officially a ‘side-by-side buggy’) means the Xbus must have electric drive, a net weight under 600kg, transport for up to three people and be limited to a top speed of 100km/h (62mph). Campervan peer-to-peer rental platform, Camplify, has highlighted the time and cost saved when opting for a UK holiday. It analysed the cost and travelling time spent on a week-long package holiday abroad compared to a similar-length UK break, revealing savings of over £1,000. The rental platform priced up three seven-day package holidays to La Palma (£524 per person, 4h 23m travel time), Tenerife (£534 per person, 4h 20m) and Gran Canaria (£515 per person, 4h 30m travel time), based on two adults and two children arriving in July 2022 from a London airport. With very few fully electric campervans on the market and working to a tight budget, we took the plunge to self-convert our Nissan e-NV200 into a cosy home on wheels. Neither of us had previous experience of campervan conversions but we felt ready for a challenge. The project took longer than expected and had many ups and downs but we relished the opportunity to learn new skills and see what we could achieve. Ecco MX Onshore sandals We never fail to be surprised at what inspires the designers of outdoor equipment. For example, it takes a certain kind of thought process to look at a motocross bike and think, “Eureka! I’ve got the perfect idea for a pair of sandals!” But, apparently, that’s what went through the mind of whoever designed the Ecco MX Onshore walking sandals. According to the Ecco website, the deep, multidirectional grooves on the outer sole are inspired by a motocross tyre tread. And, to be fair, there is a certain logic to it. Motocross tyres need to be rugged and grippy in all sorts of difficult terrain, as do walking shoes, and these certainly are. The UK’s largest campervan, motorhome and caravan dealership network, Marquis Leisure, has installed the provision for LPG refills at its Exeter branch. Provided as attendant service only (not self-service), this latest offering adds to a well-stocked accessory shop on site and an extensive motorhome sales forecourt. Alan Buckwell, Sales and Marketing Director for Marquis, says, “We are delighted to be able to offer customers LPG autogas for their motorhomes. Customers can now refill their on-board gas tanks easily.”…

Owners of the Volkswagen Grand California should get in touch with their nearest VW Van Centre, as the company has issued a recall related to rooflight bonding. The recall notification (R/2022/178) states: Due to a possible faulty bonding, the roof window cover may completely come loose. Check the bonding and modify or replace the roof window as necessary. It goes on to clarify that 115 Grand Californias are affected. It’s no secret that there continues to be a global shortage of vehicles at the moment, which was initially caused by Covid-related factory shutdowns but now is a result of a lack of component parts. In fact, German campervan manufacturer, Knaus, told us that every second vehicle is coming off its production line unfinished, due to missing parts – from fabric to fridges, you name it, there is a shortage of everything right now, including base vehicles, so it’s no surprise that the Knaus 2023 model line-up includes Ford and Volkswagen, as well as Fiat and MAN. When we told fellow campervan owners we were heading to Ireland, not a single one mentioned how delightful the ferry crossing from Cairnryan in Southwest Scotland to Larne in Northern Ireland is. We stood on deck watching seabirds and dolphins against a backdrop of the Scottish and Irish coasts, heading into unfamiliar territory and with little idea of what to expect during our three-week tour of Northern Ireland and Donegal. Ah, Cambridge! My [Ed] old university stomping ground, so it’s a place I know well, even if my recollection is largely Student Union bar-based.. The first thing to know about seeing Cambridge is that cycling is pretty much mandatory, so bring your bikes! They can easily be hired, too. Driving in Cambridge is a nightmare, so make use of the excellent bus service if not. Did you know that Cambridge University actually consists of 31 colleges? Over the years, I’ve come to accept that packing our current campervan, Stephanie, is a work of art. We ease our way into packing by printing off a checklist, which has evolved over the years. When I was a child, it seemed that a trip to York was like visiting a magical theme park. It had a castle on a hill and a museum where you could walk down a Victorian street complete with shops, horse-drawn cabs and lifelike figures. Close to the gigantic minster, the narrow Shambles with its overhanging timber-framed buildings was like Diagon Alley, although of course it was long before JK Rowling had dreamt up Harry Potter and Hogwarts.
