With summer in full swing, it’s officially new campervan launch season and, of course, I’m on the judging panel for the all-new and super-exciting Campervan Awards 2023, so it’s been a busy month for me, galavanting here, there and everywhere! In the years I’ve been Editor of this magazine, I’ve not only seen the hobby of campervanning massively increase in popularity, but sales of campervans have been steadily on the up, too, with most mainstream motorhome manufacturers now offering at least one van conversion in its model line-up. What’s interesting this year is that a shortage of Fiat Ducato vans has led converters to seek alternatives, so you can expect to see a much wider range of base vehicles in the coming season. It’s no surprise that Switzerland has been named as the priciest country in Europe to go camping in 2022 – but where are the Continent’s cheapest campsites to be found? A new study of 23,000 campsites across Europe has found the lowest priced and most expensive countries to pitch up. The results of the study by international travel and booking portal, camping.info revealed that Albania is the cheapest option. The average cost per night for two people during peak season, including a pitch, vehicle, electricity and local taxes, is just £11.04. Elsewhere in Europe, it costs less than £13 for two adults to spend a night pitched up on a campsite in Romania, Turkey, Moldova or North Macedonia. Wheelhome launches all-electric micro-camper Renowned specialist in the smallest campervans, Wheelhome, has launched its first fully electric model, the Vikenze III-e. The new camper, based on the Vauxhall Combo-e Life SE, will make its public debut at the Norfolk Motorhome & Campervan Show on 22–24 July, following extensive testing of the prototype by Wheelhome proprietor, Stephen Wheeler, including a 2,100-mile tour to Shetland and back from the company’s base in Essex. With an overall length of only 4.4m, the Vikenze III-e is car-sized, especially as overall height with the electric pop-top lowered is just 1.84m. However, it comes as either a one or two-berth campervan, with up to four belted travel seats. The second single bed, when specified, is in the roof. The Vauxhall base vehicle comes with a 50kWh…

German manufacturer, Hobby, has revealed its 2023 line-up of campervans, which includes a mix of bestsellers and new vehicles. The most significant news is the arrival of an all-new campervan called the Hobby Maxia Van, which will be officially launched at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany, at the end of August this year. The Maxia name hints at what to expect from the interior of the campervan – it is based on the larger VW Crafter, so will be offering more internal space than traditional campers. Some Hobby customers will be familiar with the Maxia name, which is used by Hobby for its premium class of caravans and features a trendy Scandinavian design and coordinated colour schemes. “The ‘hygge’ design will also be found in our Maxia Van,” confirms…

Rolling Homes likes to build something a bit special for the NEC shows, a ’van to catch the eye and draw customers onto the stand. Previously, we’ve seen a bright orange Expedition 4x4 camper and, famously, the Edition 10 built to celebrate the company’s tenth birthday. In February, it was the turn of this Shackleton model in Bay Leaf Green, but it takes more than a nice metallic colour to stand out at a show where you can now expect to see dozens of different campers. This Transporter boasted £700-worth of gloss black grilles and badges, side bars (£499), and a set of super-stylish 20in alloy wheels, also in black (£1,758). Located on the far-flung northern extremities of East Anglia, the pretty county of Norfolk is famed for its expansive skies that seem to go on forever. In fact, it has Dark Sky Discovery status and is one of the only places in the UK where you can see the northern lights, so it’s perfect for a spot of summer stargazing, either inland among the umpteen sugarbeet fields (popular with metal detectorists, apparently!), or on the lovely coast. There are numerous reasons why we campervanners are hit harder by these recent price hikes than the average car owner. Sunlight, an entry-level brand from the Erwin Hymer Group, has launched what it claims is Europe’s first full-production, entry-level, all-wheel drive campervan. The new Cliff 590 4x4 Adventure Edition, which is built on the 5.98m-long Ford Transit, powered by the 168bhp diesel engine, is packed with enhancements, including bespoke Adventure 4x4 decals and black 16in alloy wheels. Sunlight has also added premium framed windows and a larger awning to the exterior. On the inside, there is customised Adventure 4x4 furnishing and a new colour scheme, as well as ambient lighting that is integrated into the overhead lockers. It’s always great to see new exhibitors come along to the National Motorhome & Campervan Show (one of our shows, hosted annually at the East of England Showground, Peterborough), and Norvan instantly got our attention with a VW T6.1 bespoke campervan conversion with a motorbike hanging out of the back sitting on a ramp. This was a customer’s ’van and therefore not for sale, but it was a great example of the kind of thing Norvan can build for you, if you wish. We hadn’t been to a wedding in a long time, so Paul and I were thrilled to receive a wedding invite earlier this year. What better excuse for a road trip? We’d stay at the wedding venue for a few nights then take it from there in the campervan. Our friends were getting married at The Kennels in Goodwood, near Chichester. It’s an elegant building, designed by classical architect, James Wyatt, in the late 1870s. When the sun comes out and the mercury levels start to rise, the whole nation starts to prepare for summertime day trips and holidays. Mull is not the most distant island amongst the Inner Hebrides, but it’s every last bit of 400 miles from our home in the Midlands to the ferry port at Oban. Whilst I appreciate that this probably only takes a few relaxing hours in the latest model of VW California, in a 40-year-old vee-dub still powered by its original team of just 50 asthmatic horses, it’s a journey akin to a three-day camel trek.
