I’m really looking forward to a few of the staycations I started planning back when we were in lockdown and could only dream of going campervanning again. Route YC – a Yorkshire tourism initiative – has revealed a number of suggested driving routes to experience the best of the Yorkshire coast, including campsites for campervans. The six suggested routes cover Whitby, Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea. Each route includes campsites, hotels, activities and top tips for each area. Route YC says, “If you’re on the move and looking for a safe place, with a hearty meal, check out some of the great pubs dotted throughout the area. Places like the Ship Inn at Sewerby – a stone’s throw from the beach, gardens and country hall – and Filey’s The Royal Oak, open their car parks for overnight stays – perfect if you want to leave the cooking to someone else."…

Briarfields Motel and Touring Park, in Cheltenham, has recently taken a number of steps to become a more eco-friendly and sustainable site. The adults-only touring site, which is part of the exclusive Premier Parks group, has invested in battery technology to replace all of its petrol-powered maintenance machinery, including battery-powered strimmers, mowers, hedge cutters and pitch edgers. Jo Sanderson, owner of Briarfields, explains, “In December and February, we banished all our diesel vehicles and replaced them with electric. Last month saw the final piece of this particular jigsaw, when we took delivery of our electric ride-on mower. We no longer buy fossil fuels at Briarfields for park maintenance.” “Of course this is all well and good, but charging batteries isn’t without its emissions, as it takes power to charge them.…

As I was hoping to hike in the USA the following spring, I needed a way of maintaining some level of fitness during the off-season, which is why I took a trip to Cornwall for some hiking on the South West Coast Path. An advantage of Cornwall is the ability to find campsites virtually on the coastal path, so no need to pack up the campervan every day to head out. I found three such sites, which gave me six different sections of the coastal path as, from each site, I could head in opposite directions, east and west. It’s no secret that Volkswagen-based campervans remain as popular today as ever and continue to be bestsellers. What has always been the case since the dawn of vee-dub campers is that many people buy them to use as their only vehicle. The city of Salisbury, in the pretty county of Wiltshire, has so much to offer campervanners. From a plethora of historic sites to beautiful scenery, there is plenty to do and see here. Salisbury is a medieval city with an English Gothic cathedral boasting an impressive 123m spire that can be seen for miles around! Cooking outside has several benefits. One is that anything particularly oily or smelly will not fill your campervan with an unpleasant aroma. Plus, there’s a slightly different, dare we say more relaxed attitude to firing up the coals or gas. But you can’t be too relaxed. You would never leave a pot to boil over on the hob, so you should never leave a barbecue alone. Level ground is a must, no matter what type of barbecue you have. Staying well away from trees or shrubs or buildings is also important, unless your barbecue is plugged into the side of your campervan. Ford has announced details of its new E-Transit Custom – the latest addition to its fully electric line-up. Following the launch of the all-electric E-Transit, which began production in March – the first of four further all-electric commercial vehicles the manufacturer will introduce by 2024 – this latest addition to Ford’s electric vehicle line-up will also be a key component in the manufacturer’s pledge to reach zero emissions for all vehicle sales in Europe by 2035. The E-Transit Custom has a driving range of up to 236 miles, full LED lighting, DC fast charging and full towing capability. It will enter production in the second half of 2023.…

No doubt you’ll have heard of CMC (Concept Multi-Car), as it’s an established campervan converter that’s been around for donkey’s years. It first introduced Reimo campervans and the German company’s market-leading components, including bench/bed systems and pop-top and high-top roofs, to the UK back in 1988. The company was formed by Alf and Hilary Shortland, who are still involved, but day-to-day running of the business has now passed to sons, Sam and Toby. Campervans come in all shapes and sizes but there’s one thing we ’van-lovers all have in common. We enjoy visiting and exploring beautiful new places. It’s easy to see, then, why so many campervan enthusiasts have leave-no-trace ideals and do their best to look after the beauty spots and communities they visit. For the careful camper, disposing of rubbish is relatively easy – litter bins, waste disposal points and good advice are often available. However, even carefully placed packaging requires energy to create and, when it becomes waste, can put extra pressure on communities. It was an idyllic few days in the Lake District, and one of the first trips we made in our campervan after we bought it in 2014. We camped at Tarn Foot Farm, a simple grass campsite with just two toilets and a water tap. The weather was hot, and we swam every morning in Loughrigg Tarn, cycled and walked during the day, and then sat out in the sun by our campervan. In the evenings, we barbecued.
