Who are OKAN? We are a Juno Awards-winning women-led AfroCuban roots and jazz band. Born and raised in Cuba, we now live in Toronto, Canada. The name ‘Okan’ means ‘heart’ in our AfroCuban Santería dialect. We started the band in 2016 and have released two albums, Sombras (Juno-nominated 2020) and Espiral (Juno winner 2021), and an EP, Laberinto (Independent Music Awards winner 2018). We are currently making our third album. What made you pursue music as a career? Elizabeth: I remember myself as a young child singing, always in front of everybody, and getting celebrated while doing it. I guess I liked the feeling. Indian River Among the most picturesque of Dominica’s 365 rivers, the tidal and brackish Indian River’s mouth was once a Carib ‘Indian’ settlement; hence the name. From just south of Portsmouth, large rowing boats make regular trips up the river; first through marshland where migrating birds come in the winter, and then through a tunnel of vegetation dominated by spectacular buttressed Bwa Mang trees. It’s a productive fish nursery. Look out for crabs eating the algae on the roots of swamp fern and maybe an iguana on a tree overhanging the water.
