interCaribbean continues to support the Edward Garland Youth Centre, a safe space that helps the islands’ youngsters develop their life skills. September saw the fourth annual Miss Edward Gartland Youth Centre Pageant, which formed part of the Turks & Caicos Islands’ National Youth Week. The pageant’s purpose is, says the Centre’s director Roxann Wake-Forbes, “to assist our female members in finding their true personality, their own strengths and weaknesses, gain confidence, and prove to people that it is not impossible to have beauty and brains”. The latest addition to interCaribbean’s fleet has arrived, following a repaint. The 48-seat ATR 42-500 is the first aircraft to carry the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s logo (the word ‘Caribbean’ painted in vibrant colours) as part of its livery. The ATR 42-500 joins the airline’s existing Embraer fleet and will operate on a variety of routes. The 22.67m-long twin turboprop has a cruising speed of 556kmh and a range of up to 1326km. At the time of going to press, interCaribbean was set to launch its new service to Guyana. The airline will link to the South American country’s capital, Georgetown, via direct flights from the island of Barbados. With its indigenous name ‘Guiana’ meaning ‘land of water’, Guyana is renowned for its abundant wildlife, lush landscapes, dense jungle, ancient civilisations and rich culture. The only English-speaking country in South America, it is also an important business destination, with its main exports being sugar, rice and bauxite.
