As I reminisce on the years growing up as a child in Chesapeake, Virginia, my dreams were to live the expected life that I had visioned. I wanted to live in a big house, be married, and have a huge family. Being a young girl, these were my expectations of what I believed my life would be. Becoming an adult, I then realized life is different. When you’re a child, you never expect to experience losing any of your family members. It never processed in my mind that my parents may someday go through a health condition, and they’d pass away. Coming to Virginia was a transition for my parents as young adults. I was born in Connecticut and moved to Virginia Beach at the age of thirteen. My mother was seventeen, and my dad was nineteen when I was conceived. I had a unique relationship with both my parents. We shared a lot of the same interest in music and other things along the way. They always pushed me to chase my dreams. Leaving Connecticut and heading to Virginia stemmed from a prophecy giving to my father. Growing up in Virginia Beach was interesting because I took a liking to the sports culture. My parents were both immigrants. My mom came from Nagasaki, Japan, and my father came from Chincha Baja, Peru. Mom suffered from radiation poisoning due to being a child in Nagasaki when the atomic bomb was dropped there in World War II. She only survived because our military warned the Nagasaki people about the atomic bomb so she sheltered in a tunnel for three days when we dropped the bomb on August 9, 1945. As a young woman, she moved to the United States seeking treatment for radiation poisoning and met my father thereafter. My Dad, who was orphaned and working in the streets of Peru from the age of six, was born in 1901. During that time, they were riding horses and carrying machete knives on their hips. As…
