I joined the Navy in 1990, and my Bootcamp was across the country in San Diego, California. For an eighteen year-old young man from Ida Barbour in Portsmouth, VA, that was considered a great accomplishment. The streets back home had no love for me, just like it has no love for a lot of young black men today. I wanted to escape so badly, and college was out of the picture because I lacked the resources financially and mentally. My mother’s parental responsibility subsided around the age of thirteen, and I would consider that being the time that early manhood reared its ugly head. Poverty was the biggest struggle that bullied me the most, besides the death of my mother. Since neither one of my parents graduated from high school or desired to become business owners, my childhood upbringing was tough. My parents were the average Americans who did what it took to survive and opted to work a regular nine to five for a living. They both dealt with the illegal side of the law, which hindered their children, and we landed on the doorsteps of family members and later becoming adopted. I always felt as if I was left out of the equation when it came to having a normal upbringing like most children in this country. I remember this age so well because my dad committed suicide. I remember my brother and I were playing pool on base. My father was never around much because he was out to sea most of the time, but he was home for one month during the year of 1995. My father who passed away in 1999 was an abusive man, so my mother fled with her children from New York to Virginia. My great aunt, who was reasonably wealthy, accepted us into her home, but when she became ill and passed away, we immediately fell into poverty. I was only a child, but the ramification from the sudden drop financially was recognized through my eyes. My mother who passed away in 2000 turned to alcohol during these times, and with four children to take care of, she did the best that she could. My father was a heavy drinker also, which cost him his life. He died from cirrhosis of the liver. Even though my mother fled with us to Virginia, I was too young to remember my father.…

A few weeks back, I had the strangest situation happen to me. It triggered so many memories from my past involving someone that, let’s just say was not a friend. We had a severe altercation in my younger years. I noticed he began following me on Facebook and since I’m older, I view life totally different, so I really didn’t mind. After all, God is the head of my life. I always keep my favorite scripture in my mind, and in my daily walk. As a young boy, this scripture was often read to me by my mother. As the third son and the youngest of three boys, I’m so proud of my accomplishments thus far. I’m an E-4 Senior Airmen in the Airforce National Guard, and I’ve completed three years of service, and I’ve been acknowledged for five outstanding achievements. I’m a fulltime ship fitter at the Newport News shipyard, and on February 29th, 2020, I tied the knot with my beautiful wife, Kyla. We’ve been married four months, and we both enjoy being husband and wife, and with each passing day, my love for her grows stronger. In dedication to the young man whose loss inspired the idea of this creation, Mr. Joseph Michael Travieso Sr. I am a forty-year-old man, my father was in the military and I was born in Germany in 1980. In the first eight years of my life, I lived in Europe until my father decided to end his career with the military. As a young man in the military, my dad frequented the party scene drinking alcohol and occasionally using recreational drugs. As a result of those behaviors, it seems that trouble always found him. I’m so honored to be sharing my story about my first wife and the challenges we faced. I remember like it was yesterday. My first wife went into labor, and we drove to the hospital, everything was perfect. Suddenly, the nurses began prepping her, but they couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat. The nurse called the doctor, she explained to us across the phone that sometimes, when the baby is in the birth canal, you can’t hear the heartbeat. This woman told my wife and me that when she was finished feeding her Racehorses, she will come to the hospital to check on our child, but by the time she arrived, my daughter was dead. My dream was to own my own detailing business, but I needed money to get it started. I worked odd jobs at car dealerships washing vehicles, and when I got paid, I would take that money and flip it into my small weed business. My pockets were full, and my mother had no idea I was selling drugs from her home. She had a new boyfriend named Wayne, and he was cool, much better than the last guy she dated. At nine years old, I experienced a loss that I didn’t understand. It became very confusing to me since I was so young. Attending my dad’s funeral placed me at a distance, and I was scared. Barbados is the birthplace of my mother and father, and I still have a few family members living there as of today. Both of my parents moved to the United States in their late teenage years. My Dad was drafted soon after to be a member of the U.S. Army Military Services and was shipped off to Vietnam. He experienced some serious events that caused some mental and emotional side effects. His coping mechanism for the images and triggers he had developed from the many traumatic experiences he had was to self-medicate with alcohol. I was born in Jacksonville North Carolina and I was a military kid. My dad served in the Marines while my mother stayed home. It was five boys, three girls for a total of nine siblings. I’m the middle child, so I got to experience both sides of the spectrum when it pertained to ages. Growing up was a challenge, and a lot to overcome because being in such a big family, the opportunity to go out recreational was limited. It was only enough for necessities. The things that transpired in my life growing from a child to becoming the man that I am today. At the age of thirteen, my mother moved from Virginia with her children to Washington D.C. We lived there from the years of ’68 to ’78, and during that time, she left my father and started to date another guy who was instrumental in her children’s lives as a father figure. Memories of growing up in the country allowed me to understand dedication. I had a very humble beginning. My parents raised me in a single-wide trailer. I didn’t experience what it was like to have running water in the home until I was fifteen years old. Moving to VA, In 2008, I moved from New York to Virginia for a change in my life. I was offered a position with law enforcement, but because of the hours, I didn’t keep the job due to my being a single mom. My support system was at zero since most of my family was in New York. My daughter and I just started an S-Corp on my birthday, which is July 5th. This S-corps will support other black own businesses across the United States.
