SEB KUSTOM Ø FRANCE YAMAHA XJR1200 ‘Bratstreet’, Seb’s Yamaha XJR1200, was built from a 1998 Christian Sarron replica that was sold in France after the boss of Yamaha France, Jean-Claude Olivier, came up with a wild stunt to market the XJR. He commissioned 12 new bikes to be custom painted in the colours of famous racers who would ride them in a demo ‘race’ during the 1995 French GP at Le Mans. Among the riders were Kenny Roberts, Giacomo Agostini, Eddie Lawson, Randy Mamola and, of course, Christian Sarron. The event went down a storm and Roberts and Sarron reps were created for sale. Not only that, Yamaha developed a national racing series called the XJR Cup that supported some of the big French international races from 1996 to 1998.…

Kengo Kimura – founder of Heiwa Motorcycles – has a workshop with clusters of photos on the walls, a fading timeline of memories. In between, there are pegboards of tools and shelves filled with spares. It’s a telling mix of nostalgia and organisation. Inside the large shop, the space is broken down logically. There’s a machine shop with a lathe and drill press, then a room with slip-roll machines and English wheels to form sheet metal, then along a wall are stout-legged tables where the hand fabrication occurs. SEB KUSTOM Ø FRANCE YAMAHA XS650 To create this tasty little Yamaha bobber, Seb shortened the forks by 10mm and created a lower hardtail rear – even though it looks as though the bike still has twin shocks. “The fork legs have been machined to remove the support for the front fender and the legs have been turned around so the disc caliper is mounted in front rather than behind.” With all the weight Seb’s hacked off the machine, it only needs a single disc front brake, rather than the twin of the later XS650s. Seb machined his own aluminium struts to hardtail the rear end. “I deliberately designed the shape of a shock absorber and added holes in the bottom half of the struts to visually lighten them.” The…

SEB KUSTOM Ø FRANCE HONDA 600 SHADOW Seb bought the 600cc Honda Shadow with the aim of creating a bobber. “It was my first project so the build took a long time because many pieces had to be made to measure or adapted. There are very few bolt-on accessories for the Shadow. I built it in my garage with my dad who helped me learn how to customise a motorcycle.” The first job was to modify the rear of the frame. Seb wanted a hardtail but kept the standard swingarm and created the triangulated rear end. The forks are from a Harley Sportster, but shortened by 10cm and equipped with a 21in Harley wheel.
