Anew Harris Poll shows that 51 percent of outdoor power equipment owners say they either don’t pay attention to or remain unsure of the type of fuel required for use in their engines. Fifty-one percent! The poll was conducted in January 2020 and commissioned by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, according to a report from the National Marine Manufacturers Association. I realize a survey of outdoor power equipment owners isn’t the same as a survey of boaters, but it still raises concern. On one level, I don’t want to see any boater’s engine damaged by using a fuel blended with too much ethanol. According to engine-makers, burning gasoline blended with more than 10 percent ethanol will likely damage your marine engine—and will definitely void your engine’s warranty. Today’s marine engines…
ON BOARD WITH… CAPTAIN’S TEST FOR COMPARISON’S SAKE ONLINE THIS MONTH NEWS FIRST IMPRESSION GEAR HEAD ON BOARD WITH… How did Florida Ski Riders start? Around 2016, my wife and I went boat shopping, but ended up getting a couple of bigger PWCs. Shortly afterward, the entrepreneur in me realized there wasn’t really a centralized group or brand that was connecting PWC owners, so that’s where Florida Ski Riders came from. What does a Florida Ski Riders event look like? We create both small- and large-scale rides. At one of our last events in Dunedin, we had 509 skis in the water. That was a spectacle but well-organized. Once you’ve been part of something like that, it’s unforgettable. What does the PWC lifestyle look like for you and your family?…

Rough sea conditions during a recent boat test had me hastily looking for a place to stash my phone. The only spot within arm’s reach was a dry, pristine-from-the-factory livewell. You can see where this is headed. Back at the dock an hour later, I opened the lid to discover a flooded well. I wasn’t worried; it had a big-name waterproof case. Then I noticed salt water under the screen protector. The big name’s charging-port seal had leaked, and my phone never turned on again. Five months in, the Hitcase Splash is treating me—and my new phone—better. Compared to many tough cases, the Splash feels surprisingly thin, yet it carries a military-spec shock rating and IP68 waterproof rating. Drop it from up to 6 feet (I have) and dunk it…
Formula’s 380 SSC slots between its 330/350 Crossover Bowriders, and the established 400/430 SSC and ASC models. The 380 SSC boasts either twin sterndrives or outboard power. The sea-carving ability of its 21-degree deadrise hull, termed the Formula FAS3Tech stepped hull, is proven by the performance we experienced running the sterndrive version. (See boatingmag.com for that test.) The 380 SSC continues Formula’s open-bow, full-cabin dayboat legacy. We’ve not tested another boat in this class that offers both a full single-level deck, as well as sleeping for four with a cabin galley, plus a stand-up, enclosed head belowdecks. Other boats split cabin living spaces or combine the galley and head. The 380 SSC offers a more cruiserlike belowdecks than center-console and bowrider dayboats of similar size.
