SailGP successfully finished a series of upgrades to all 12 wingsails ahead of the event in New York in June, following a full inspection and review. All 12 boats were fit for racing in New York. The issue was first discovered following testing and analysis of Australia’s wing following its collapse in San Francisco. The decision was made to cancel Enel Rio Sail Grand Prix in May after identifying a potential defect in select wingsails across the F50 fleet. Each F50 has since received an upgraded ‘Main Element 1’ (ME1) before racing began – the area of the wingsail closest to the F50 platform, which bears the most load in racing conditions. Rising Kiwi 49er team Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush struck gold at the European Championships in Greece on June 9, their proudest sailing achievement to date and the first major success for New Zealand in the class since a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Menzies and Lee Rush secured overall victory in a strong men’s skiff fleet with a day – and the medal race – to spare, having taken the lead on the second day of competition in Thessaloniki. Ranging from the 35m Cantiere superyacht to a bargain $12k rubber ducky, there was something for most tastes among the 824 boats on land or bobbing beside the pontoons at this year’s Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, May 21-24. The event is a major catch-up for the industry, so the bars and restaurants surrounding the marina were buzzing until late, as were the parties in the stylish Intercontinental Hotel nearby. And while helicopters buzzed overhead continuously, it wasn’t the fall of Saigon, although the atmosphere in the many hostelries where deals were struck was sometimes combative enough at what is the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest boat show. His name is Octavius Lugay, but like other ‘boat boys’ and ‘yacht helpers’ (moorings, diesel, ice, and island tours) on the island of Dominica, he goes by a rather dashing nickname: Sea Cat. Harriet and I first met Sea Cat when we sailed our Dolphin 460 bluewater cat Hands Across the Sea (now named OCEAN) to Dominica in 2008. Petrel and Heather were the second and third clones of Aoma which Logan Bros had built for C. T. Brockhoff of Sydney and shipped in October 1899. Logan Bros built Petrel for Syd Dempster and Heather for Dr Gordon Craig, both of Sydney. Another year later, in November 1901, after Petrel and Heather’s outstanding successes in Sydney, they built the fourth clone, Culwulla, for Walter M. Marks of Sydney. In the last issue I followed the racing history of Petrel in Sydney, through her brief sojourn in Hobart during World War I, to her arrival on Port Phillip in 1919, racing out of Geelong. There is a little bit that goes into planning a crossing. We decided to go from Picton to Wellington over two days. We planned to stay overnight on Arapawa Island near the entrance to Tory Channel. Dad and I both reached out to people in our networks who were familiar with this stretch of water. Graeme Henry (#160) was especially helpful. Soon after we became involved with Newtown Primary School, we befriended the French teacher, Mrs. Solange Payne, and the Principal, Jerry Coipel. Then one day the 10 boxes of books we had collected over the summer arrived. But looking around the school it was hard to figure out where the books would go. There was no library and there were no bookshelves in any of the classrooms (soon we built a dozen bookshelves). In fact, there weren’t many books around at all. The Ministries of Education in the West Indies are incredibly short of funds. They seem to have enough money to supply some textbooks at the beginning of the year, but that’s about it. After 20 years of reliable use, the Jabsco domestic water pump was beginning to get a little noisy in operation and the accumulator tank would very slowly lose pressure over the season, requiring a top-up from the car foot pump each spring. Over the period of its working life, the pump only needed one new pressure switch, and apart from the minor additional noise, it was still functioning perfectly. I nevertheless decided to upgrade to one of the new generation of Jabsco flow-sensed pumps, which are claimed to be nearly silent in operation and don’t require an accumulator tank to provide a smooth flow of water. A restoration project on a Salthouse 65 by The Boat Works in Queensland revitalised its profile and interior spaces, revamping the look with a modern window system and transforming this sturdy ocean-going cruiser into a head-turning vessel once more. New Marine Protection Rules apply to recreational boat owners who use their boats in the sea. The key rules for recreational boats limit the emission of harmful sulphur oxides (SOx) from fuel use and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from engines. Both harm human health and the marine environment. The Part 199 Rules are based on the international convention MARPOL Annex VI, which seeks to reduce emissions from ships and boats around the world. Ocean swimming has always been close to my happy place. But just recently I felt that I’d neglected our relationship, and although I often swim off our yacht Sula during the summer months here in the Bay of Islands, I’d never undertaken a big swimming project before. I’m no stranger to swimming, though. I just love getting in the water and especially love open water swimming. There is nothing like a swim in the sea to start off the day, especially if you’re in the water early when the sun is creeping over the horizon, touching everything with its warmth and beauty. Born in 1986, the only daughter of her Israeli father, Shuki Shukrun, and British mother, Daniella Aleh, Jo Aleh grew up in Auckland and had a lifelong dream of boats from an early age. “All my childhood scrapbooks are full of boats.” It was watching Team New Zealand win the 1995 America’s Cup that sparked Aleh’s boating dreams into reality.
