A good forecast on January 21 looked like the perfect opportunity to get out on the water while Mike’s mother was visiting from Brisbane. Leaving the beach, Mike’s son Max took the helm while they rigged several small trolling lures, expecting kahawai or perhaps albacore. Just in case, Mike added a big marlin lure on 37kg breaking strain line. Barely three minutes after leaving the trailer, something attacked the big lure. It begins in Fiji, which, as we will see, has been a magnetic attraction to Hargraves for most of his life. In 1928, his father, Monk Hargraves, a Bank of New South Wales employee, was stationed in Levuka, Fiji, where he met school teacher Evie Clark. The couple married in Levuka and returned to Auckland, where Jack was born in 1937. Shortly after that, the bank relocated the Hargraves family to Cambridge and, in 1947, to Invercargill. Common practice among all race codes is to focus on weight reduction to realise higher speeds, no matter whether you’re karting, sailing, track racing or powerboat racing. In powerboat racing, utilising ballast involves a process of adding weight (ballast) to the load of the boat to help balance it in a similar way using trim tabs does. Ballast, however, is favoured over trim tabs in rougher sea states where unpredictable bow lift is a more common occurrence. Ballast weight can either be fixed or adjustable. Fixed weight ballast typically involves bags of sand placed in the bow area of a boat before the start of a race. Some circuit boat racers add small ballast sandbags to either side at the stern as well, but this is more commonly done to…

Perhaps most critically, the rapidly increasing price of fuel is encouraging many anglers to fish closer to home. Which isn’t necessarily bad. After all, near-shore waters around northern New Zealand host plenty of snapper, especially during the warmer months, although they’re generally not very big, especially around Auckland. Ditto for the kingfish. So how do we make the most of this situation? Then there’s the skyrocketing price of bait and berley. A typical day’s fishing can cost between $100–200 in bait – expensive when compared to a couple of $20–25 slow-jigs or $10–15 worth of soft-baits, which can last more than one trip if you’re lucky. GoBoat Founded in 2014 in Denmark, GoBoats are self-drive electric open boats. They are built in Denmark using recycled plastic and driven by a German electric outboard motor. Licenced for eight people, the boats are speed-limited and create virtually no wake. The concept has proved extremely popular, and there are now licenced fleets of GoBoats in Europe, England, and Australia. It’s well known that a boat with an inboard engine and a heat exchanger will need regular descaling. Any part of the engine that remains in constant contact with heated water will over time inevitably build up a layer of lime scale (calcium carbonate). For parts that do not get hot there is an added chance of encrusting organisms growing on the internal surfaces, including molluscs which build their shells in that same calcium carbonate.
