Welcome to the December edition of Boating New Zealand magazine. It’s amazing to me that this is the last issue for 2023! The calendar year has flown by. That said, our team must pull together the January 2024 issue before we take a break for Christmas, so there are still some very busy weeks ahead of us! I am taking an extended break this Christmas, travelling to Europe with my family to visit relatives and explore new places. I plan to produce the February edition of Boating NZ magazine while I’m away, working remotely – in theory no different to working from my home office, except for the time zone. Competitors are being urged to get their entry in early for the 2024 Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta, with a fantastic prize up for grabs for those who do, and additional late entry fees for those who don’t. Entry fees are the same this year as last year. Early birds who sign up and pay their regatta entry fee by 31st December will go in the draw to win a Gill Offshore sailing jacket from Burnsco in Opua. However, skippers late to the start line and those who don’t enter in time will be hit with a $100 late entry fee. Organisers hope the change will encourage more competitors to enter before the 31st December cut-off, which helps the volunteer organising committee run a successful event. …described by Peter…

New Zealand’s oldest sporting event and an iconic fixture on the City of Sails’ calendar has secured a new naming rights sponsor for its 184th edition on Monday 29 January, 2024. The Oceanbridge Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta will be the event’s official new title. After two years in which the regatta has operated without a naming rights sponsor, organisers are celebrating the sponsorship agreement with Oceanbridge Shipping as a welcome endorsement of this much-loved and timeless event. “It’s been a really tough few years for sponsorship” says the regatta’s Executive Officer Joyce Talbot, “Since Covid we know a lot of businesses have been struggling, and now with so much economic uncertainty and rising costs putting the squeeze on everyone, we are over the moon that Oceanbridge Shipping have come on…

The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) has added new high-speed craft to its fleet, which will allow it to deliver divers, troops and mine counter measures on military operations around coastal waters. The three 12.5-metre Littoral Manoeuvre Craft (LMC) will be deployed by HMNZS Matataua, part of the RNZN’s Littoral Warfare Force. They will provide a vital link between coastal operations and tactical insertion of diving and hydrographic specialists, as well as providing a reconnaissance option. They can also be used on international deployments. Built by Hobart-based Sentinel Boats, the three LMC are the first of their kind to join the RNZN fleet. World number seven, Nick Egnot-Johnson (NZL), and his Knots Racing crew of Chris Main, Zak Merton and Peter Soosalu emerged victorious to secure the National Match Racing Champion’s title after a thrilling final against Cole Tapper (AUS) and his CYCA Youth Sailing Academy team. Egnot-Johnson won the best-of-five series final 3-2, with Tapper showing a strong dominance, winning the first race and not conceding defeat until the fifth and final race where he came off second-best in a tacking battle on the start line. The Lighthouse 2023 New Zealand Match Racing Championships, from October 26th to October 28th, was hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) and saw six teams sail three round-robins in stage one over Thursday and Friday before progressing into the final stages on Saturday.…
