Occasional contributor George Empson’s photo somewhere on this page reminded me that boating takes many forms – and that Kiwis enjoy it all year round. George took the photo after a recent powerboat racing event on Lake Tekapo in a spectacular setting surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps. It shows racegoers enjoying some welcome, I’m sure, post-race sunshine and socialising outside Lake Tekapo Boat Club. George is a keen and talented photographer who happened upon this event on his way home from feeding out his merino flock. New Zealand claimed victory at the opening event of the 2023 SailGP season, winning in Chicago ahead of Australia in second and Canada in third. The Kiwis are at the top of the season leaderboard for the first time since joining the circuit. “This puts us in a great position at the start of the season and we’re really happy to walk away with the first win. The Department of Conservation is asking people to do their bit to prevent humpback whales becoming entangled in fishing gear as they migrate north along the coastline. Marine technical adviser Mike Ogle says humpbacks are most likely to become entangled when migrating during winter to warmer waters. “Cray pot lines are the major cause of entanglements but nets, longlines and other ropes can also snag whales. “We’re asking people to collect any abandoned rope, fishing gear, lost or cut pot lines, avoid excessive slack in ropes when setting pots and stay vigilant, particularly from now till August.” DOC has two whale disentanglement teams trained to safely disentangle whales using specialised equipment. TORQEEDO HAS ANNOUNCED a new battery option for its Deep Blue series of powerful electric drives: Deep Blue Battery 80. The new battery leverages lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and delivers 80kWh of energy storage, twice the capacity of the previous generation of Deep Blue batteries. The new battery’s ‘cell-to-pack’ architecture is an advanced approach to battery assembly in which individual battery cells are directly integrated into a pack without the need for intermediate modules or components. This advanced construction offsets the lower energy density of LFP batteries and enables a more compact footprint that is easier to install in many boats. The high volumetric energy density (278Wh/L) is particularly important for larger, heavier displacement vessels like cruising yachts and commercial vessels. We hadn’t been on a risky adventure, just out with a local friend to take underwater pictures of a reef pass on the southern side of Matuku (Lau group, eastern Fiji) for a report to get government funding for a no-fishing ‘tabu’ zone there. Our friend and boatman Maikeli, the headman of the village of Makadru, wasn’t so lucky – his body was found two days later. On this fateful morning we were reluctant to go. The weather was overcast and we both had a cold, but we didn’t want to disappoint Maikeli – and we were eager to help protect the environment of our favourite island in the Lau group. Living in New Zealand has many undeniable benefits, including our spectacular boating environment. Day one of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival was getting off to a grand start as 200 vessels of every size paraded in their finery, some fully dressed, and most with flags flying in the light breeze. Leading the charge were the 10 tall ships that showed the colonial maritime history, including the giant James Craig, right down to the tiny Duyfken, one of the earliest colonial visitors from Holland, which first charted Western Australia in 1606. “As our sister regatta the Superyacht Cup Palma gets underway this week [June 22-23], we’re very pleased to share the NZ Millennium Cup will add its name to the superyacht regattas raced in the heart of major cities,” says organiser Stacey Cook. “When the New Zealand Millennium Cup is raced from February 23-26, 2024, it will be with Auckland, the City of Sails, as its backdrop.” The regatta is known for fun, exciting racing with a Kiwi flavour. A diverse range of recreational fishing, environmental, law, corporate and business organisations united as the Hauraki Gulf Alliance delivered a petition calling for bottom trawling, scallop dredging, and Danish seining to be banned from within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. The petition of 36,589 signatures was presented to MPs Chloe Swarbrick and Eugenie Sage outside Parliament on Thursday 22 June 2023. The alliance includes the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society (Forest & Bird), Greenpeace Aotearoa, WWF – New Zealand, the Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand (ECO), the New Zealand Sports Fishing Council (NZSFC), LegaSea, the New Zealand Underwater Association, Yachting New Zealand, Greenpeace NZ, and the New Zealand Angling & Casting Association. The Auckland Provincial Yacht & Motor Boat Association was established in 1919 as an affiliation of the town and country yacht clubs that existed at that time. There were the Town Clubs – the central clubs from Taiotea at Browns Bay in the north to Otahuhu in the south – and the Country Clubs, from the Awanui Cruising Club in the Far North and south to Mercury Bay and Rotorua. New, tougher legislation around biofouling has impacted boat owners and operators of marinas and hardstands alike. (See Guidelines.) The latter are obliged to ensure their facilities meet environmental standards, while among some boat owners there is a perception that hardstand capacity is reducing just when the new regulations have boosted demand for hull cleaning. Biofouling legislation has put increasing pressure on boat owners to ensure their hulls are clean before travelling from place to place. Many regions/regional councils, such as Northland and the Marlborough Sounds, now have strict biofouling standards for boats entering their waters. The tricky thing is that there is not one national set of biofouling rules for boaties to follow, with each region taking its own approach – and many marinas have even stricter standards. The first thing you notice about the Hanse 460 is its shape. It looks more rounded than the old model, has a chine forward above the waterline which disappears amidships, and a strong turn to the hull aft, like a rounded soft chine. The yacht is beamy and carries her beam aft, with a slight reverse to the bow. Claiming to be the second-oldest model yacht club in the world, in continuous operation since 1898, the club has been part of Christchurch’s cultural make-up throughout that time. Club Patron, Mayor Phil Mauger, congratulated the club and unveiled a plaque on the occasion. An impressive display of historic model boats lined up against state-of-the-art modern RC yachts. The Founders Trophy race was the highlight of the day, the racing started using a replica cannon. About 60 boats managed three heats in very calm conditions. I’d agree with her there. As would the skipper of Fox II, Roy Borrelli. A New Yorker of Italian heritage, he left the smoke and trauma of the Twin Towers attack, for somewhere, “much quieter, much more peaceful. I’d even settle for boring in fact.” He achieved the first two in Akaroa, on the Banks Peninsula. But boring – never.
