After what feels like months (because it has been months!) of grey skies, rain and wind, the sun has shown itself. In the last couple of weeks our part of the country has enjoyed a stretch of brilliant blue skies and winter sunshine. I read a snippet in the NZ Herald the other day stating that during the month of June to date (June 15), Auckland has enjoyed more sunshine hours per day on average than it did for the whole of the month of January! To actually see the sun for more than a few hours at a time was quite the shock, but at Boating NZ we made the most of it, taking advantage of the weather to review as many boats as we could while conditions held…

Located close to the entrance of the sheltered Putiki Bay, the innovative marina is 85% complete and will be home to 181 berths ranging from 12 to 30m in length. The berths are protected by an internationally designed and locally manufactured floating breakwater of 23 pontoons, the largest of which weigh 220 tonnes. The marina has vehicle and pedestrian access to Donald Bruce Road via a purpose-built wharf that is also nearing completion. The gangways that will take vehicles and pedestrians onto the floating carpark pontoons are on site and will be installed in the coming months. Despite concerns about the state of the economy and an indifferent weather forecast, people flocked to the show and opened their wallets while they were there. By the end of the show, there were SOLD signs on boats everywhere and thousands of keen anglers walked away with new rods, reels, lures and tackle. The show, as always, saw the debut of dozens of new boat models, along with the world’s latest outboards, electronics and accessories. While the chance to see, touch and buy these new releases was a major drawcard for the almost 32,000 paying visitors to the show, so too was the chance to win this year’s Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize. While sailing development and technology will continue to evolve, most of our sailors remain in displacement mode, with an increasing number involved in caring for our yachting heritage, from preserving old classic yachts from the turn of the 19th century to restoring more modern classics. As the yachting time horizon stretches forward, more of our ‘modern’ yachts are beginning to become classics, one such example being Bruce Farr’s half tonner Titus Canby. Titus Canby was Bruce Farr’s first keel yacht design, which he undertook as a 21-year-old. The design was requested by his friend and fellow 12-foot racer, Rob Blackburn. AS CRUISING SAILORS, Tom and I enjoyed the day-trip snorkelling and hiking excursions. But when I spent a week on the 83-foot, 16-passenger M/V Bonita, I experienced the closed-to-cruising-yachts parts of the Galápagos Marine Preserve. After a day exploring Santiago Island we departed after dinner to cruise overnight. Gathered on deck on a clear starry night to view the glowing red lava fields of Volcan Wolf on the northern edge of Isla Isabela was an awesome sight not available to us cruisers. The next morning, we awoke to thick fog. Fog at the Equator? Yes, because the northern tip of Isla Isabela swirls with the cold water of the Cromwell Current. Tower launched boat insurance in December 2020, at the same time partnering with Coastguard to help keep even more Kiwis safe out on the water. Claims for underwater impact damage topped the list, accounting for 44.6% of all claims. Tower Managing Director Partnerships, Jonathan Beale, says underwater impact claims are usually instances of boats hitting rocks or sandbars, but also include boats crashing into other boats. “Recently, we’ve had claims for upwards of $80k worth of damage so, without insurance, you could be in for a nasty shock. “With underwater impacts accounting for nearly half of all boat claims, we encourage boaties to look at insurance cover that includes third party damage so you aren’t caught out with costs to repair someone else’s boat as well as your own. Two certified rodent detection dogs traversing the Mokohinau Islands and Rakitū set off on May 26 to ensure not a single rodent is present. This annual surveillance exercise is part of the Department of Conservation and Auckland Council’s ongoing monitoring of these precious predator-free islands in the Hauraki Gulf. Adeline Bosman, DOC ranger and dog handler, says that conservation dogs are trained and certified for a specific target, in this case rodents, as each type of mammalian predator requires a different approach to catch. “Pru is smelling for rodent odours, including dead or alive animals, and other traces such as faeces, urine and ground scent. “When Pru detects her target scent, her behaviour changes noticeably. Sometimes you run into someone who challenges the way you view your existence in the world. This impact can be dramatic and immediate or a subtle influence that percolates through your mind for many years. And quite exclusive too, given its tiny yet charming anchorage. With its imposing 180m-high cliffs, and lurking about 5.5km into the morning sun from Aotea Great Barrier Island’s never-crowded Whangapoua Beach and Haratonga Walkway, it’s been likened by one blown-away traveller to Tintin’s Black Island. From this viewpoint, Rakitu, or Arid Island, certainly looks deserving of its English name. Recreational boats and their skippers should be regulated, says the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC), in its final report on the capsize of a recreational boat on the Manukau Bar on 16 October 2021, in which three of the four people on board died. A 5.5m recreational power boat was returning from a fishing trip outside Manukau Harbour. While crossing the bar, a series of steep, breaking waves swamped the boat, its engine lost power, and it capsized and sank. A boat occupant called 111 and a rescue helicopter and two nearby private vessels responded promptly, recovering all four from the water. None wore lifejackets. Only one person survived. In every epic adventure yarn, our hero must traverse a portal of big-time danger to progress to the stirring denouement of the tale. And so it is with visiting the Mōkau River, which debouches on the wild border (it is the border) of the west coast Waikato and Taranaki coasts. It’s little-known that this is the second-longest river in the North Island, rising in the remote bush of the Pureora Forest and winding down through spectacular limestone country and a rare remnant of lowland kahikatea forest in its lower reaches. I’D SEEN HOW sea lions had taken over a few decrepit fishing boats in the harbour of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on Isla San Cristóbal – there were dozens of brown furry bodies languishing in the cockpit, on the foredeck, up in the wheelhouse. But I never thought it would happen to us. Then one afternoon, returning from a day of provisioning in town, I found three Galápagos sea lions on board OCEAN. One animal (I estimated it at 130kg) was lounging on the teak cockpit grate, another (82kg) was draped across the helm seat, and a third one (70kg) was sunning, belly up and blissed out, on the starboard side deck. Run over five consecutive weeknights, the 15-hour theory course is presented by Michael Wang at CBE’s Auckland offices in Westhaven. Charles Johnson, says his son Clinton, was an enigmatic chap who, despite no formal training was “a naturally gifted engineer who loved nothing more than inventing – he enjoyed developing solutions for doing things better and more efficiently.” For a mechanical thinker/tinkerer, Charles (3 December 1898 – 11 March 1969) was in the perfect environment. He – along with his father (Benjamin) and brothers – owned the Johnson & Sons automotive engineering works in Auckland’s Parnell. Founded in 1921, by the mid-1930s it was a well-established operation with around 25 staff specialising in engine rebuilds.
